The Mussel and Steak bar is situated in the Grassmarket and is very easy to find. The Grassmarket itself has an excellent vibe and we enjoyed looking at some of the shops too pass the time until we reached our reservation time. On arrival at the resturant the staff were very courteous and polite and in no time at all we were seated at our table. The two waiting staff we had were both lovely, the man who took our order was a very kind gentleman from New York City who had a wonderful accent, he also had a wonderful command of the menu and waited patiently while myself and my daughter made our choices, we both choose steak, the other waiting staff man who was delightful helped myself and my daughter on how the steaks were cooked and when they arrived they were both exquisite, we also choose a starter and some sides and they were all amazing, the waiting staff were both very attentive and saw to all our needs. Moving swiftly on to puddings they were both scrumptious and I myself enjoyed immensely the sticky toffee pudding, my daughter who had a choclate based pudding confirmed that it was also delightful, there is also an extensive drinks menu which complemented the food wonderfully well. We had a free bottle of water on arrival and we ordered Irn Bru of course lol and a divine mint based cocktail, we also had at the end of the meal a cappicino and an Irish coffee, both were perfect and a great ending for an enchanting evening. I would give this resturant a plus 20 even though it only goes to 6 and will be recommending it to all my friends and family, The bill was extremely reasonable considering the wonderful quality of food we received and we will definately be back at some point in the future. :) :) :)
We never fail to enjoy the food here - we have been coming for more than 10 years, and it is always excellent. Of course you need to like Mussels and Steak, the choice beyond that isn't huge, but if you don't, why would you go? Well perhaps for the tablet ice-cream... Also worth noting that they are very child friendly.
A fabulous meal. All very understated and relaxed but food was awesome . Staff friendly and attentive without intruding. Value for money and highly recommended.
Excellent customer service and food even better - oh wow really delicious- highly recommend this restaurant - I was not a fun of sea food before but this changed since my dinner at Muscle & Steak - Mhmmm:))
We were visiting from the US and this restaurant was recommended by the staff at the Apex Grassmarket Hotel. The first time we walked in, the place was jammed, so we made a reservation online, which worked great. The restaurant is very cozy and comfortable and the staff was very attentive and did not make us wait. After our seating the staff gave us a few minutes and then asked for our drink order. We found that in several restaurants we had to wait way to long for even placing our drink order............not here, it is well run and well staffed. The food was fantastic (great mussels and steaks....no kidding right) as was the deserts. To top it off the prices were very reasonable. We did eat lunch here as well. Everything was fantastic. We recommend it very highly.
The salmon starter and the salmon main were incredibly well balanced dishes - the Chef makes the food dance on your tongue and the key ingredients sing with the well-chosen additionals. Staff are friendly and the environment is understated and unassuming- perfect for relaxed night with 5-Star food. Crab linguine was great, and Mussel sauces are to die for! Desserts very good (we had sticky toffee pudding and mulled wine poached pears) but mains are definitely the star of the show. Beautiful plating. Wonderful focused selection with the whisky flights. Would highly highly recommend.
We went for the lunch menu and it was fantastic! Warm welcome at the reception and shown to our table. The waiting staff were very attentive and polite. Starter - Haggis Wellington 10/10. Main - 1/2kg mussels with chips 10/10 ( love the mussells in this place and chips are devine ) Dessert - Sticky Toffee Parfait 10/10. This place is excellent, I cannot fault it, Great food at a great price and a great location. 3 Courses and a drink for 2 people £35.
We enjoyed a delicious meal, with attentive but not intrusive service. Just what we were looking for during our Scotland holiday. I would definitely recommend Mussel & Steak Bar and will thank the tour director who recommended it to us.
The food is absolutely divine. The steak is beautifully cooked, with hardly any fat on it. The sauces are delicious I have tried both the pepper sauce and the whiskey sauce and they are spectacular. The cheesecake for dessert I highly recommend, it is undoubtedly the best cheesecake I have ever tasted and possibly one of my favourite desserts. The service is very polite and fast, I absolutely love going here and it is so far my favourite Edinburgh restaurant.
Having visited this restaurant twice before, the last 3 or 4 years ago, I have to say my group was generally disappointed with our visit. We had various starters, 3 of us opted for the queen scallops, which would best be described as miniature scallops, served on a bed of extremely salty seaweed. Of our mains, 3 of our group opted for steaks. 2 sirloins and the picanha - which was rump. The 2 sirloins were returned immediately for re-heating. The picanha which was medium was medium to rare in some parts and very rate to the point of being inedible in others. The mussels we're lovely! (oh, the sides of chips also had a distinct vanilla flavour about them....) Our initial complaint resulted in the deduction of the 10% service charge, which as we pointed out a) should have been optional anyway and b) didn't cover our satisfaction, resulted in a 12.5% discount from the food bill and no service charge was left - which was unfortunate for the staff as their service was great. Such a pity the food let them down Unfortunately due to the large number of good to great restaurants in Edinburgh, it's unlikely we shall return. In saying that, when we left around 5pm, the restaurant appeared full and I hope for the staff and owner's sake that this was just the chef having a bad day....
