While not-so-sunny Scotland may feel like a million miles away from the west coast of the USA, Calistoga radiates a Californian charm, bringing a wee bit of sunshine to the streets of Edinburgh. At this laidback restaurant tucked away down Rose Street Lane North, dishes inspired by the Golden State are served up alongside an array of speciality Californian wines. A popular spot in the New Town, we recommend booking your table at Calistoga in advance!

Amazing wine, lovely food, excellent service, casual atmosphere, no guns or mental presidents. This was a lovely night out. If only all of the USA were like this!
Outstanding service and and excellent food. The restaurant is set well back off the street but is lovely inside, warm and friendly. All food was exceptional.
The service was quick and attentive. The food was excellent both in taste and presentation. I started with prawns, continued with steak, and finished with parfait. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and we will happily return.
Great Sunday lunch, excellent food and the friendly staff made the visit first class, will definitely return. Not easy to find,as we had been before to a wine tasting which was a great experience it was a joy to return.
It is always a total delight to spend an evening at Calistoga. Gordon is a charming and attentive but unintrustive host. The menu interesting and presentation of the food excellent. I never have any hestitation in recommending Calistoga; it is always a great evening. It is the only place I have ever had my push-bike secured safely for me. Thank you Gordon and colleagues.
This restaurant has a good atmosphere, when busy as it was on Saturday evening they should invest in maybe one more waiter. The food was delicious, my main was the wild boar and chicken wellington, starter was Thai prawns, pudding was peanut and pistachio brownie, yes all mouthwatering stuff. There were two things that I thought needed attention, the portion sizes were a touch miserly, not very Californian at all. Had I known that I'd have ordered some sides, that however, would have added more to the total bill which was already a touch on the high side. All in all, I would recommend and will definitely go back. Well done Calistoga.
Calistoga provide an interesting and varied menu with exemplary service. Of particular interest for the wine lover those who don't partake are more than satisfied. We always enjoy our dining experience at Calistoga and look forward to returning. It is especially good value for pre theatre.
Always a pleasure to visit Calistoga, food delicious and the wine was good too. I took a friend who hadn't been before and she too enjoyed her meal. The restaurant is tucked away is an unassuming side street , even the taxi driver didn't know where it was. Had to give him the postcode! Well done to Gordon and his team.
Food beautifully cooked, well served in a relaxing atmosphere. Wine selection great. Liked the wine recommendations on the menu to compliment each of the food choices. The wine recommended to go with the sweet was just a dream. From the polite and friendly welcome to the helpful ordering our taxis home this was a lovely experience. Thank you. Calistoga
We went to Calistoga on an itison voucher. The food was quite good, the steaks in particular were very nice, but the ambience really let us down. We could have got over the slightly dodgy location at the back of Rose Street, but the interior was really cramped and the layout utterly uninspiring. Ok if you're going on a cheap voucher, definitely head somewhere else if you have to pay full price - there is no lack of good restaurants in Edinburgh!
I live in sunderland but have several shopping trips in edinburgh throughout the year ( having a food buisness myself im picky !!! ) but I always go to the calistoga before heading home . All my family go now whenever they have a trip there. The ingredients are very good quality , cooked excellent and well presented. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly , the staff are attentive but not intrusive . I have also had a wine tasting experience before and that was the best one I have ever had finishing with a fab meal , cant wait to go back to this hidden little gem !!!!
Delicious food and a friendly welcome. Sorry to see the place so unusually empty. If you haven't been, try the really good value 'early dining' option. You're sure to want to return. Don't be put off by Calistoga's situation in a rather shabby lane.
My first visit to Calistoga. The food was OK. I had the pigeon breast to start and a rump of lamb for main. Both OK but uninspiring. I cannot see for the life of me what on the menu was californian, it was a standard and rather uninspiring selection. The wine list was superb with a large selection of California wines. The place was like a library, no atmosphere whatsoever. There was also no theming and the restaurant was dark and unwelcoming. OK but distinctly average.
Always a treat to eat at Calistoga. Gordon and his staff did not let us down with a lovely meal and no hassle that we were 30 mins late post rugby international and stayed on long past our welcome! A hidden gem
Calistoga was excellent service, value for money and delicious food as always. We love eating in Calistoga and will return again in the very near future.
Seeing the general rate on Google, I have booked this restaurant for a celebration dinner. The restaurant was empty when we arrived. Not a very fancy place, nice furnitures and clean. We ordered 2 starters and 1 main and a waiter in a white t-shirt could not hide his disappointment for our "poor" order. The flatbread with dips is a tiny tiny flatbread, very good, but you can barely start tasting it and it's finished. Three scallops a bit dry, with a nice fishy sause, and a £18 grilled salmon, where the black rice was salty but tasty and the salmon fillet was like if I had bought it and grilled it at home. We didn't order any of the £8 desserts because we didn't want to end up more disappointed. Average restaurant quality, but priced like a Michelin restaurant. Really disappointed. The food is good, but NOT at the level you pay for.
My friend from work told me about this place. She's a big steak fan, and this is apparently one of the best steaks she had. A day later i can happily confirm that. In fact it was so good that my very own wife, who's not a big steak fan, had a flat iron steak, and she loved it! Also the wine selection is huge so we'll definitely come back for taster sessions!
Excellent place in a spot where you would not expect to find one. Pleasant, friendly atmosphere, quite crowded at the time of our visit. We had a three-course dinner. The starters were OK but generally forgettable, but the meat I had for the main course was awesome and the desserts were splendid. Good selection of affordable wines. Recommended for anyone interested in a bit of a taste of the States but who doesn´t want to get too close to Donald...
Never fail to be impressed by Calistoga, the food is always innovative and fresh, the Scallops and the Partridge were cooked to perfection, the staff friendly an efficient, altogether a great night..
As always good food, wine and service. If you are looking for good wine in Edinburgh, Calistoga is the place to come to. Loved the prawns, peanut butter mousse and the steak.
We didn't know this place existed until this week despite frequenting Rose Street regularly but am pleased we found it. Friendly, relaxed, great food and extensive wines. The steak was fantastic, served perfectly medium rare with peppercorn sauce. Best chips for ages. I had a Zinfandel 'Predator' red which complimented the steak perfectly. My wife and son were very impressed with their salmon and they had a lovely sparkling with it. Will be back soon.
The food was delicious and the wine choice equally satisfying. The service was great and there is a lovely ambience at Calistoga that makes you just want to keep going back.
Excellent meal, excellent wine, excellent value for money! There is a good range of choice on the menu with lots of delicious options. The staff are friendly and helpful but not too obtrusive. Surroundings are attractive once you get inside. Location on a back lane off Rose street is a little off-putting to begin with but the end product is superb.
Their wine both red and white was excellent and really delicious. My wife's Halibut main course was really the size of a starter. Halibut is an expensive fish but, either charge more and serve a reasonable size for a main or warn the customer. (We did complain and were given a reduction). My Lamb Gigot was done just right and very tasty. This is a small cosy restaurant with very pleasant staff. We like this restaurant and will doubtless return but maybe ask some questions about our menu choices before ordering.
Fantastic food, fresh, beautifully cooked and presented, as always with Calistoga a pinch of unique flavours & unusual ingredients/combinations. Love it. Place quiet last night which was unusual, atmosphere lacked a bit of a buzz.
Always enjoy Caistoga. Great Californian fusion cuisine and wonderful wines. Service was excellent. But I did think the menu and plating up was a little tired. I don't think the menu choice has changed much over the past three years, and fear that staff may now be cooking and plating up by number rather than adding a little personal touch. The prices justify more creativity.
Lovely restaurant extremely friendly staff, especially the owner who was very friendly when my mother turned up extremely early for our reservation! Food was delicious, I especially enjoyed the beef spring roll and main course was the perfect size. Lovely fresh flavours and nice atmosphere, quiet enough to have a proper conversation, which is a top consideration for me when choosing a restaurant! Highly recommended.
We booked for the early bird dinner. There was a good choice of food on the menu. The staff were very polite and friendly. The food was beautifully cooked and well presented. Also, an excellent wine list with clear descriptions. All in all, a very enjoyable dining experience & we will definitely be back.
Very limited choice for vegetarian on set menu ( only one main course) . My starter felt like it had been plated well in advance - the goats cheese mousse ( which had little flavour) had to be scraped off the plate and was a tiny portion. The peanut and chocolate dessert sounded good on paper but was extremely heavy and solid. I do understand that they were a chef down in the kitchen but disappointing nonetheless.
Have been to Calistoga many times over the past 10 years or so and it never fails to disappoint. Great food, great wine, relaxed atmosphere.
Another lovely evening! Thanks to Gordon and the team! The food was wonderfully prepared. Fantastic tastes for starter and main. The wine selection is always SO good and a great value. Stuff you generally can't get anywhere else in Scotland. Still a favourite restaurant after 12 + years!!!
A friendly restaurant with some wonderful food based on fresh seasonal ingredients majoring on some very good grilled meats but covering something for everyone. The great value list of Californian wines is another big attraction for us. We always have a very enjoyable visit here!
Very good restaurant with a lovely friendly ambiance.Good food ,well presented with good service .Various menu options available that should suit most people's needs supported by a very good wine list at attractive rates.Give it a go I am sure you will not be disappointed.
We have been regulars at Calistoga for a number of years and have never been disappointed. Staff always friendly, good food and of course excellent wine choices.
My friend and I had a lovely lunch here yesterday. Two courses for £12. The food was very fresh, well cooked and presented. It's just off Rose Street so isn't easily seen which is a pity as its a lovely place to eat. Give it a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
As usual, Calistoga never disappoints. Steaks cooked as requested, open ravioli very enjoyable. Great choice of wines, had a lovely Zinfandel. Friendly service, great value.
I found the discreetly hidden jewel just off Rose street and small enough to be intimate with a focused menu, great food and very friendly staff and low pricing makes this place very well worth trying and it is now on my favourites list of places to eat in Edinburgh
Amazing wine! Delicious food beautifully presented and good sized portions. The staff are very friendly and we had excellent service from our attentive waitress. A brilliant 30th birthday meal out that the whole party (12) enjoyed. We'll definitely be back. Thanks!
Good friendly service and delicious meal. The steaks were cooked to perfection and the wild boar was excellent. Two of us didn't even have room for a dessert the meal was so filling. All in all a very good experience
Tasty food and prompt, friendly service. We were there on a Friday at lunch time and it was quite quiet with only one other table of diners. I imagine it would be busier for dinner. They do 2 courses for £12 at lunch which is great value.
Excellent service great food definitely would go back. chicken chorizo main was quite small but very tasty . My wife had risotto which was very nice and a good portion excellent value for money definitely recommend. Satay the waitress is very friendly and knowledgeable about the wines
We had been once before and found the same high standard this time - great food, great wine choice and recommendations and great value for money even with the supplement for steak - we had the early bird menu
Absolutely stunning. Fabulous food, wine and wonderful service. All staff very friendly and not intrusive. They were good at recommending dishes off the menu showing their knowledge of the menu. We'll definitely be going again. A real hidden gem.
The food here was really tasty however the portions especially for the starter were small. I had been here previously and had ordered a menu with a flight of wines which had been really good with the wines matching the food very well however that didn't seem to be on he menu this time which was a shame.
Nice place inside. Portions small, especially the dessert. I had gammon and was given 2 small slices which were on the dry slide. Husband asked for well done steak and was given rare/medium. Garlic prawns absolutely yummy. Nice friendly staff though came across a bit inexperienced. Good priced wine. Not a bad experience, however not for us
Lovely little restaurant tucked away around the back of Rose Street. Worth seeking out. Good choice on the early bird menu. Quality of wine is excellent and you'll never be disappointed whatever you choose. Very friendly staff too.
Good value especially if you dine early on a set meal. Location is off Rose Street but don't be put off when you turn into the lane. Restaurant is quiet with minimal background music so good for a catch up with family and friends.
Excellent meal as always. Delightful prawn followed by delicious wild boar. Gordon welcoming and unobtrusively attentive. Just a delightful experience in a well loved ambience at a slight distance from the hectically busy festival venue streets.
Really friendly, upbeat waitress. Bit disappointed by the food. Not as good as I remembered. We had flat iron steak and chicken both with chilli chips. Chips could have been crisper and no taste of chilli. Steak cooked perfectly but chicken needed something to bring out the flavour. Shame as previous visit was great.
Fantastic value for lunch 2 courses for £12, garlic prawns delicious and flatiron steak cooked to perfection (£2 supplement). Decided to finish with dessert for an additional £4 and lovely wine which is reasonably priced.
