More about the restaurant: Caravaggio

Italian master painter Caravaggio is renowned for the sensual and innovative use of his materials, conferring him a definitive place in Italian and Baroque art history. Similarly, London Italian restaurant Caravaggio’s fine Italian cuisine is known as the most serious in the City of London, with its luxurious, art deco premises down Leadenhall Street being formally opened by none other than Luciano Pavarotti in 1996. Despite its spacious premises, Caravaggio is, unsurprisingly, a very busy spot, especially at lunchtimes. Although a welcome wait is to be had at their marble-topped bar by the entrance, bookings are absolutely essential to avoid disappointment.

Thinking about making a Caravaggio booking?

Caravaggio is one of London’s best Italian restaurants, famed for its uncompromising attitude when it comes to seriously fine Italian cuisine. Slap bang in the middle of the City of London’s square mile, would-be diners pour out of Liverpool Street, Bank, Aldgate, and Tower Hill stations to grab a lunchtime table here, with crowds anxiously waiting at the marble-topped bar near the entrance to Caravaggio’s imposing premises in a former banking hall. Needless to say: book in advance. And it is worth mentioning the setting for what is likely to be your Italian dining experience of the year. Designer Tony Thomas worked his magic on the place, preserving the art deco light fixtures that hang two stories up above the elegant dining room, and extending a mezzanine around the whole affair to accommodate up to 150 eager diners. The icing on the beautifully presented cake is the fact that Caravaggio, which was opened in 1996, to much acclaim, by tenor and erstwhile gourmand Luciano Pavarotti.

Caravaggio’s a la carte menu is something special, difficult to match even in a city such as London, packed as it is with quality Italian cuisine. Caravaggio is one of a family of London Italian restaurants, whose legacy has been growing since its inception in 1951. The same uncomplicated values of Italian cuisine remain, with their expert chefs using fresh and simple ingredients in creative ways. Caravaggio’s menu is bursting with classically structured voyages through antipasti, pasta and pesce, carne and contorni, rounded off with dolci and formaggi that would still make Pavarotti’s ample mouth water. Book a table at Caravaggio’s Leadenhall Street premises for a true taste of Italian fine dining.
