Haverstock Hill is not without its charms. This north-west corner of Camden is home to the closest you can get to a local high street this close to Central. It is not, however, where you’d immediately head for a moment of unadulterated sun, heat and brightness. Unless you happen to know about Coco Bamboo, that is. Home to Haverstock Hill’s very own escape, Coco Bamboo is a Brazilian and Caribbean restaurant offering Camden residents a slice of the sun in NW3.
There’s plenty of spicy bites down the road from Coco Bamboo’s Haverstock Hill premises at Camden market, and even some bits and bobs of Caribbean and Brazilian food. But for all its popularity with tourists with their bags from Cyberdog, the market is not ideal for finding authentic cuisine. Enter Coco Bamboo. Guests descend into the restaurant’s cavernous interior and are greeted with a menu that demonstrates the kitchen’s local favourites. Try ackee and grilled palm hearts for starters and then opt for Brazilian bobo de camarao, tiger prawns in coconut milk with sweet chilli and cassava puree, tomatoes and coriander. If you’ve still got a little room, you can’t go far wrong with the house chocolate cake, especially given it comes with a dollop of coconut ice cream too.
Coco Bamboo is open Wednesday-Sunday from 5pm on weekdays and from 12pm during the weekend, so you can pop in for something a little lighter if you feel peckish around lunch time. Pick at some tapas and sip one of their signature cocktails and dream of the beach.
