Latin American food is slightly under-represented on the world’s table, but down at Costa Azul on Rockingham Street in Elephant & Castle, they are making a name for themselves and their cuisine. Hailing from Ecuador, they replicate the tastes of South America in this corner of South London, with superb results – but don’t just take our word for it: get yourself down and try it out for yourself!
Great food, giant portions, lots of choice on the menu, friendly service, clean, decent interior and reasonable price, £10-15 for the main. What more can you ask for?
Delicious food, huge portions. The menu is mostly seafood, which is first class. The service is causal and very warm and friendly. I will return for the authentic latin american offering.
Latin American food is huge – huge flavours, huge portions, huge diversity of ingredients. Stretching from the deserts of Mexico to the snowy tip of Argentina, the cuisine of South America takes in a massive range of influences, and at Costa Azul in Elephant & Castle, they’re bringing those dishes to South London. At their Rockingham Road location, they serve up specialities from Ecuador and beyond, with an emphasis on fresh ingredients, top quality seafood and superb steaks.
Costa Azul is Spanish for ‘blue coast’ – referring to the seas to the north-east of Ecuador, the homeland of the chefs – and thus the menu at this Rockingham Road Latin American joint is heavy on the seafood. Fish dishes come in the form of fried tilapia, king prawns in white wine and coconut sauce and grilled tuna steak. The charcoal grill gets a run-out over the meats as well, with a wide selection of beef and pork steaks. On the weekend, they roll out a huge range of traditional stews to the delight of the local South American ex-pat community – a cultural experience not to be missed, but do make sure you book your seat in advance!
