“Robust French flavours, cheery continental vibes and brilliant value for money”
– Good Food GuideWinchester is as elegant and historical a British city as you could wish to find, so it’s fitting that Côte Brasserie has set up shop here. Be assured that French food lovers in the heart of the city and indeed on the outskirts are very glad they did, too, as this little restaurant is busy and buzzing every day of the week. Here you’ll find authentic French dishes prepared with knowledge and passion, served in a dining space on High Street that’s spacious, light and perfect for relaxing. Whether you’re visiting Côte for the first time or for the tenth, you’ll be made to feel special.
Not far at all from The Great Hall of Winchester and the Westgate Museum, Côte Brasserie offers an all-day dining arrangement that casual diners and fans of the French go crazy for. And we’re not surprised, because all you need to do to see that Côte Brasserie know exactly what they’re doing is step through the restaurant doors on High Street and embrace the genuinely warm welcome and aromas of the French kitchen drifting straight up your nose. The dedication to service at this city centre location is second to none, and the produce of the kitchen is of the same calibre it would be safe to expect from any independent restaurant out there.
As a champion of all-day dining, Côte Brasserie Winchester offers every meal of the day at astounding good value. So much so that you’ll leave every time not only with a warm glow in your stomach, but wallet that’s still heavy in your pocket. The a la carte menu in particular is made up of traditional French flavours as well as some slightly more region-specific, but highlights for us include the pan roasted pork belly with gratin potato, braised Savoy cabbage, apples, thyme and calvados jus, as well as the roasted duck breast, served pink with a creamy potato gratin. Head to the city centre now!
I visited today with a friend from Guildford. The service was very good and friendly. The menu interesting and varied and at a good price. The atmosphere was relaxed.
An excellent meal in really good surroundings. Started with the calamari whihc is a usual for me and it was as good as ever, followed by belly pork and creme caramel. Excellent the whole way through!
Been here loads of times and with the rare exception, each time has been really good. The food's beautifully cooked, and the waiting team are friendly and efficient. The 10% of times when it's been below par have still been OK, it's just you expect it to be ace each time. It's one of my favourite restaurants.
The set menu during the week is fantastic - great value for money! Every month it changes which encourages you to try out different items on the menu. Lovely atmosphere.
We arrived 10 minutes early for our table which turned out to be still busy, which was perfectly fair enough. It was unfortunate that there was no bar for us to wait at, we were advised to go elsewhere for a drink first. I understand that this is a space issue, but it would have been nice to have been able to start our evening with a drink rather than be chucked out to wander the streets for 15 minutes/go to a bar/pub. Our table was booked for 8.15pm. 2 of our party ordered the shared steak dish (was it the chateau briande?), but we were told that the last one had just been sold this seemed a shame. However, we ordered steak as an alternative and the food was delicious. When we came to settle the bill, 2 of the couples were treating the other couple, who had just got engaged, so it was our treat. We wanted to split the bill between 2 couples. The young lady who sorted this out for us must have shouted the total amount about 3 times, even though I tried to indicate that as it was a treat we didn't want the amount shouted round the restaurant! We did laugh, but it was a bit unfortunate! A great night though and delicious food. Thank you.
WE booked online through a promotion that gave us a free bottle of wine However our server told us they had run out of this wine so she called the manager. The manager told us they had had a busy weekend and they would not be replenished till Wednesday. She had an almost full bottle of the wine. She asked if we would accept this and when it was finished she would give us a glass of wine if our choice. We were happy wth that and went ahead with our orders. The restaurant was lovely and warm with a good ambience and background music at a perfect level. The wine was good and well chilled. When we had finished it the manager selected another one for us which we liked. I had the duck breast and my husband had boeuf bourgignon. Both were delicious and good portion sizes. We had some of the sourdough bread to start but we were too full to order pudding. They ordered a taxi for us to take. Us back to our hotel. It was a lovely evening which good have gone wrong but the managers attentiveness made it a really good experience
Delicious food, excellent service, lovely decor. Scrumptious fresh sourdough baguette with perfectly soft butter kept me going whilst I waited for my friend to arrive. To begin, I had French onion soup and my friend had steak tartare. Both expertly seasoned. I have a heavy hand with the salt pot but I didn't need it this evening. For our main courses I had duck and she had pork belly. My gratin would have looked better served in a dish as her was, but that did not detract from the creamy, crispy texture. Duck was cooked perfectly, my only gripe was that a bit more sauce and a few more cherries would not have gone amiss. Pork belly was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, served on a huge pile of greens and a side dish of the yummy gratin. No puds but I know from experience the creme brûlée is exactly what you want from that French dish!
Having had a very disappointing experience eating in our hotel restaurant the previous evening we decided to go into Winchester on the Monday evening. We chose Côte because we use various of their branches often for lunch when in town shopping and are never disappointed. This was our first evening meal at a Côte Brasserie so weren't sure what to expect especially it being a Monday. We needn't have worried. The service was perfect. We were lucky to find the Anniversary Menu was available and both had that. It was one of the best restaurant meals we've had in a while. Very relaxing, very good, interesting and well presented food and very good value. We will be back next time we are in Winchester. Thank you.
Good standard of food generally, great service. The restaurant itself is slightly noisy in places, so perhaps not the top choice for a quiet night out, but we were accommodated by moving to a different table when we mentioned it. The only slightly off-putting part of the experience is the 12.5% gratuity added to the bill by default - fortunately I felt the service was worth it, but it makes it hard to object if it weren't up to scratch, and personally I would prefer to have the choice - I probably would have given more in fact. I guess some people don't however, and this is the way to increase that. Just be aware when booking that this will be added at the end, whether you like it or not.
The food is always good at Côte and this was no exception. We had a special Valentine’s menu which had many old favourites on it and was accompanied by wine pairing. I am often disappointed by special event menus in restaurants as I find they are limited in variety and quality but expensive. This one was good and we particularly enjoyed my duck breast cooked pink and my wife’s raspberry creme brûlée. Service was fast and friendly; if anything too fast and we could have done with a little more time to make a leisurely meal. Not a cheap meal and they slip in a 12.5% gratuity at your “discretion”. I hope it went to the staff. Would certainly recommend an evening here. Special lunch menu probably better value.
