Established in 1962, Hendersons Salad Table & Restaurant is more Edinburgh institution than trend-following vegetarian eatery. Still, the flagship of this famous family of eateries can certainly compete with any chic inner-city vegan and vegetarian joint in terms of cool points. Decked out with sleek furniture and creative lighting, though still with a comforting and casual atmosphere in their historic Hanover Street location, this vegetarian restaurant befits cool cats and business types as well as it does health-conscious or ethical eaters. That said, however, Hendersons Salad Table & Restaurant doesn’t rely on its enviable New Town location, cool design or suave lunch crowd for its reputation.
You may be impressed by Hendersons recent expansions around Edinburgh, or their growing popularity and praise around Scotland and beyond – but the proof of the pudding is, as always, in the eating, and Hendersons proves that being guided by vegetarian and vegan principles in no way limits possibilities in terms of flavour, creativity and enjoyment. Hendersons Salad Table & Restaurant on Hanover Street has become one of the New Town’s most beloved restaurants over the past half century, a reputation undoubtedly built on the superb quality of their food. The menu changes regularly, but you can be sure of a bevy of heart-warming treats, from internationally inspired dishes like Thai spring rolls and slow-baked Moroccan stews to local necessities like organic fresh bread and oatcakes.
Lovely atmosphere, with live piano music which we didnt know whilst booking. Great food too, we had the veggie lasagna and risotto. Friendly staff, overall a great evening.
They offer plenty of choice for vegans and veggies, lots of flavour. The staff are friendly and the restaurant is well situated. will go again.
Delicious food and great atmosphere, staff were friendly and attentive. Salads were all fab and I can recommend the Hendersons Haggis! Would definitely come back here again
What a great restaurant. The food was exceptional, the wait staff were friendly and helpful. One of them even gave us tips on places to visit in Edinburgh. A wonderful experience.
The food was great as usual. Having dined in the Hendersons vegan restaurant recently, however, the decor in this one could do with a refresh and our table was so crammed in beside other tables that I had to ask a person at the neighbouring table to move so I could sit down. Close to our table was a 'Danger: Asbestos' sign on the ceiling which was a bit distracting, and nobody informed us that they weren't accepting card payments until we'd received the bill so my husband had to go and get cash from the nearest ATM. The food was wonderful but these few things marred an otherwise lovely evening. The satay skewers with pineapple salsa is amazing, and we really enjoyed the falafel with tartare sauce.
Fantastic restaurant. Really quaint lively little place. Decor really suits the atmosphere they are trying for. Staff very extremely nice. Food was really really good, and the portion sizes were massive. Take mental note, make sure you are really hungry, or only have 1 course :). Service was unbelievably fast too, we had our wine before we had even finished ordering our food and the food itself practically appeared as if by magic with no wait, and was extremely hot so knew it was freshly prepared. The piano playing while we ate just added to an extremely wonderful experience.
We visited the salad table and had a wonderful meal. My husband and cauliflower wings as his appetizer. He had the Henderson's Haggis and I had Vegan Pad Thai for dinner. Both were wonderful! My husband loved his meal so much that we bought their cook book so we can make it at home back in the US. Dessert was incredible too. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone!
As a consummate omnivore, I booked this restaurant more for sentimental reasons-to celebrate mom's 72 birthday-as she and my late father had celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary there some 34 years ago. Out large party was seated immediately, I was pleased with the food, mom enjoyed the ambience-live music etc. Our waitress was attentive, if a little rushed off her feet. The cake was yummy. I'd recommend this but I am confused, as I love meat but really enjoyed this food.
Overall our experience was fine except that the waiter was very keen to clear plates and took away any that were finished with, even though the others at the table were still eating. I don't feel that this is particularly courteous of the waiter as I was always taught to wait until all had finished before clearing. It felt a bit as if he was in a rush to get us out! However, the food was lovely and we would probably eat at Hendersons again if we were in the town.
Great food and location. Service was a bit slow but it was busy. We booked online but when we got there the folks knew nothing about our booking - something for Quandoo to look into? Luckily there was a table free for us. Recommend the Haggis but remember to not eat a thing all day as you will be VERY full after a visit to Hendersons. One of our favourites.
Lovely atmosphere and food very much to our liking as my travel companion is vegetarian. A great variety of items on the menu, all vegetarian and/or vegan, so there should be something for everyone. We started with potato skins and olives with bread. For mains, I had pasta, my friend had cottage pie. I finished up with a vegan cheesecake.
Some of the food was nice but the portion control wasn't great. I had roasted stuffed tomatoes and the side garnish of coleslaw was huge! The vegetarian haggis was ok but it was smothered in pepper, there was far too much of it and the spinach was massively over salted. While we were there, there was a piano and trumpet player playing jazz...I'm not averse to jazz but when you're eating, the trumpet rather cuts through any kind of conversation! Desserts looked pants so we went elsewhere. It was cheap through overall, I wouldn't go back
The restaurant was empty which is always a downer but it was early and there was a jazz duo, a plus. The merlot house wine tasted diluted and the food microwaved but the relative high score is for the ingenious recipe and ingredients. I frequented Hendersons in the 1970s and my memory of it is so much better than the present reality but perhaps that's a trick of memory!
The food at Hendersons was delicious! As we had our 9 month old with us we booked for an early dinner, it was nice and quiet. The staff were friendly and helpful without being there all the time. The food came in good time, and as mentioned was delicious. Would definitely go here again.
Fabulous piano player and delicious food, especially the bread and olives. Lovely beer. Great service. Overall created a really nice atmosphere. I've been vegetarian all my life and it's wonderful to find a such a welcoming restaurant that is still busy and doing so well.
As a non-vegetarian this was quite an interesting experience. Bit disappointed by the fact that there was only salad like dishes. The satay skewers were just skewers but I had assumed try came with satay sauce or something and they didn't. This was disappointing. There was nothing on the menu the kids really liked. The cauliflower curry was lovely, as was the soup for starters.
Our reservation ended up being in the evening, not lunchtime. Very easy to rearrange. Very friendly waitress, who told us she's getting married this Friday - hope the day goes well! Excellent food, no complaints. Will visit next Christmas when in Edinburgh again.
We had an excellent lunch with generous portions and very tasty food enjoyed by non vegetarians equally. The coffee is excellent and there is a good choice of cakes to go with it. Staff were pleasant and cheerful. Altogether a good experience.
Great choice of food and good value. Service was friendly and nicely attentive. Conveniently located just a five minute walk from the hotels on Princes Street and the online booking just before leaving the hotel was so simple. Highly recommended
Really liked the choices available. All the produce was nicely presented and all looked very fresh and healthy. We reserved our table and glad we did as it did fill up very quickly over the lunchtime period, booking recommended!
Used to go there as a student and enjoyed the salad bar experience. Getting table service has taken away some of the ambience.... Good live music but drowned out by the screeching banshees at the table next to us.... Food was still good....
The food is lovely but mine wasn't hot enough, temperature-wise. Also, I felt it lacked a bit of atmosphere - maybe because it wasn't very busy. Not particularly cheap, but then vegetarian food, especially eating in the centre of town, never is.
In stark contrast to my previous night's experience (at the group's Vegan Restaurant around the corner) this was a pleasure from start to finish. I look forward to returning to enjoy the venue's live music.
What a lovely place so cosy and romantic! Staff were very welcoming and attentive. The food was absolutely delicious, full of flavour, well presented and served promptly. The piano player was a welcome surprise!
The restaurant supplies excellent vegetarian and vegan food. Good wine (limited selection but at a very reasonable cost). Live music was excellent and not too intrusive. Good service. I will be going there again
The food was delicious with a great variety of options and the service excellent. Online booking system worked well. Excellent selection of both vegan and vegetarian food, my vegan daughter was in heaven!
Food as usual excellent, restaurant quiet as it was a Tuesday, salads great variety and many gluten-free items, which helped my guest. Soya milk, decaf coffee, nothing we asked for was unavailable.
Great veggie meal for the whole family, a mix of veggies and vegans. The live guitar music was really good too! We can highly recommend the wine jug and the salad bar.
The main courses were delicious (Pad Thai and Hassleback Aubergine). As was the Chocolate and Hazlenut cake, but we thought that the Blackberry Pie was a bit too 'health-foody'. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, great jazz piano
The food and service were very good. Nice wine, a bit pricey for table plonk. Atmosphere enhanced by music and the restaurant being busy. Downstairs seating area a little tired, decor-wise. Toilets up to date and very clean.
Very disappointed as we were celebrating my daughters graduation. We had both chosen Hendersons after a lovely evening to celebrate her birthday in April. We were given a table next to toilet door and across from table clearing area and told that no other tables were available. This meant we were away from the main hub and the music which is one of the reasons we enjoyed our last visit. Our main course was so late (11/2 hours after we sat down) that the waitress asked if we would like to order dessert before we had eaten. She apologised profusely but when our main course did arrive it was very poor. My shepherds pie had simply been reheated and the salad was warm with no dressings offered. Risotto portions were very small and again appeared to have been reheated. I did express my disappointment and we were given a 50% reduction off our food bill. However it really was so bad that we won't ever go back. We spend many weekends in Edinburgh and it was our favourite restaurant for special occasions butt we feel severely let down and disappointed.
Although the food and service was great, it was hardly possible to hear yourself think. The piano music so loud, it was more like being at a concert, rather than providing an enjoyable background. You could only talk with the person sitting right next to you, so no convivial exchanges around our group of 5. The person at the end of the table was effectively left out of things most of the time. But that it'd have been too hard to try to find another restaurant at 20:00 on a Saturday, we'd have left.
I first came here with my mother 50 years ago. We loved it then for its excellent food and ambience and nothing has changed. Go early to ensure a table !
Wonderful atmosphere and great food. The veggie haggis was overpowered by black pepper and the wine list had a huge gap in price between a house wine at £13 ish per half carafe to £30 for few choices of bottles with nothing in between.
My wife and I had a lovely meal. My only reservation was that my portion of cauliflower and pea curry was a bit small. A normal sized plate would have been better than a bowl.
We really enjoyed our visit to Hendersons on our weekend break to Edinburgh. The food was great with lots of choice and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Nice atmosphere and waiting staff. Plenty of choice if you're vegan. Really enjoyed my cauliflower 'wings' starter. But main meals weren't that tasty. We went somewhere else for pudding because we weren't inspired by what was on offer at all- emphasis was on what was excluded (gluten free, dairy free etc) rather than what made the dish special.
Lovely vegetarian restaurant. Great salads. Good value. Had the mezze which was excellent. The desserts looked good but no room left for them. Recommend it for vegetarians and non-vegetarians.
Underground restaurant interior rather a throw back to the 70's, with pebble dash walls and wooden furniture. We enjoyed the guitarist playing even though it was rather loud as the sound has no where to go. Food good but not remarkable, would recommend.
excellent self-service salad bar with great selection of vegetarian and vegan options. also a very relaxed, easy going restaurant section. friendly and helpful staff. good wine selection too.
great atmosphere, really nice decor, food amazing if like me you love healthy vegetarian food. prices reasonable especially for such quick service and great ambience. loved the music
The first time going and I loved it! The food was delicious, the ambience was homely and the staff friendly, not to mention the price...definitely great value :)
The food was amazing and delicious. Ambience was also great with a live piano playing whilst dining. Just a shame that the service was quite poor. Dirty wine glasses, waiting service clearing plates whilst the rest of the group were eating and slammed down plates on the table. A small thing but makes a difference.
Fabulous food!!! The Flavours were beautiful! Best vegetarian restuarant I have been to. Next time I'm in Edinburgh I would definitely come back for a second visit!!
Lovely staff, fabulous food and a cosy, welcoming atmosphere! We will definitely be going back soon. It catered to everyone's tastes, even the non-veggie of the group!
We had delicious vegetarian food and restaurant has great atmosphere ,service was very responsive and there was also live music which was not too loud , lovely
Good vegetarian food, great organic beer and friendly service but don't visit if you are in a rush. One or two extra waiting staff on a busy Saturday night might be good.
Excellent food, good music. Our 3rd visit, and the high standard is maintained - we are now booking a table every time we stay in Edinburgh!
Really cosey, nice atmosphere. Had some live music in the background too which we didn't expect! Menu was very varied and service was prompt! Highly recommended
Fantastic vegetarian and vegan food (from starters to dessert), good wine, friendly service And atmosphere, live music, slightly small but clean toilets. What's more to like?
