Further Information

Whether vegan, vegetarian or neither, chances are you’ve heard about Hendersons already. Now operating a handful of eateries around the city, Hendersons has been serving Edinburgh delicious food for half a century now. Long before veganism was in and being vegetarian was a buzzword, Hendersons had already perfected food according to their own philosophy: delicious, handmade, satisfying and healthy. That philosophy remains strong today, meaning that their groundbreaking Hendersons Vegan Restaurant on Thistle Street in the New Town isn’t just a trendy vegan joint, but rather a favourite, family-run restaurant where carnivores and others can enjoy seriously good food and a welcoming atmosphere.

The draw of Hendersons Vegan Restaurant is becoming strong far beyond Edinburgh, attracting curious diners from across the UK and the Continent, so it’s best to book ahead if you want a taste for yourself. Perhaps the jewel in the crown is their famous vegan haggis, but Hendersons offer a classy menu that stands alongside most elegant New Town restaurants anyhow, vegetarian or not. The smoked tofu has a complexity akin to a well marbled steak, a Moroccan pomegranate salad is bursting with fresh flavours, moreish marinated olives, quality garlic bread and fine wine make it easy to forget this Thistle Street restaurant is any different from other top eateries in Edinburgh.

Our favourite restaurant by far! Well r everything about this little hidden gem. The food is impeccable, the service always has a smile and the restaurant has a love relaxed ambiance. No one is rushed out the door for their table back. Just sit chill and relax and enjoy everything this little place has to offer.

Lovely food friendly service. Place was busy and had a good atmosphere, the house red wine was smooth and light and none of the food disappointed.

We booked a table for two to celebrate an anniversary, for the second night in a row (because why not?). We arrived expecting great things from this establishment dedicated to plant based foods (a step above a traditional restaurant offering a vegan menu at the bottom of a list of meat options!). We loved our experience! We dined on raw zucchini ravioli with pesto, cauliflower "steaks" with mushrooms, a tris of spreads served with oat cakes, and finished the meal with a slice of avocado and lime cheesecake. All gluten and dairy free, all delicious! The atmosphere was soft and inviting with wood accents and hints of green from plants sitting in small pots. Friendly and timely service. Book ahead for dinner on a weekend! We saw a handful of people turned away because they didn't have a reservation. Highly recommend Henderson's Vegan.

The food was delicious and the portion sizes were excellent (usually vegan restaurants are quite low on portion size). The staff were really lovely and helpful too and made the vening just that little bit better. One tiny point - and it's not really a point - is that the lights were quite bright (and the music was quite loud) and that surprised me for evening service. It perhaps would have been nicer had the lights and music been turned down a little? But it's a very minor point and the food and service were great. We'll definitely return!

We had a great experience at Hendersons Vegan. We went on a Sunday evening and the atmosphere was very intimate (probably because of the small size of the place) and welcoming. The waitress was extremely polite and always very helpful. My mum got a parsnip and apple risotto while I got the tofu teriyaki. Both dishes were of very good quality and the ingredients all very fresh. The dessert was the best part though. We both got a chocolate and nut cake which was amazing!! One of the best vegan dessert I had. Highly recommended.

Best meal I've had in a long time, and refreshing as a health conscious vegetarian to have so much choice! We had the sharing platter for 2, which was delicious, and I had the teriyaki tofu as a main which was unbelievable. The notella tart was really good too, and it was all light enough that I didn't feel totally stuffed after. The service was attentive without being annoying and I think we'll be back on a regular basis! Other restaurants take heed: food doesn't have to be creamy and stodgy to taste good!

We had a wonderful meal at Hendersons Vegan Restaurant! The food was tasty, nicely presented and full of variety! I'm not a Vegan per se but would be tempted to eat at Hendersons everytime I'm in Edinburgh! Friendly and welcoming as well!

Loved our meal at Hendersons. Only trouble was having to choose because everything sounded and looked so good. Between us we had lentil and coconut soup, which was wonderful and came with the most delicious bread; focaccia with tomato and onion - really fresh and tasty; Thai curry which was excellent; and chocolate cake with coconut cream to finish - also delicious and decadent but without feeling heavy. Great location, friendly and efficient service. Will definitely go back the next time we're in town.

Have been to the salad bar before and wanted to try the vegan restaurant for a while. I found the staff very friendly, and its nice being able to have a selection on the menu (as a vegan) that I didn't need to ask if it was suitable or not. On top of all that, the food is amazing! Would highly recommend

My wife and I have been to Hendersons 3 times now and have had an excellent time every time we have been, including this one. The drinks and food are both delicious, with a good variety of options, the turmeric latte this time was particularly good. Portion sizes are generous, and the prices are good as well, I would highly recommend visiting!

Took some committed meat eaters and they were pleasantly surprised and wowed by the inventiveness of the dishes. The playful platter and soup were lovely. There doesn't seem to be any warm options for the main - all three of the mains we chose were raw / chilled but delicious nevertheless and the chocolate and nut dessert was incredible. Attentive and friendly server and nice surroundings - if a little chilly.

This was my third time going to Hendersons and it was equally lovely. Of the three times I've been there, I've had plenty of different foods and today was wonderful. We had the vegan haggis and mash with gravy and also, the nut roast. Two hot chocolates and some bread. Delicious food with friendly and helpful staff members.

Delicious food, great service. The tofu teriyaki was delicious and filling, not like my previous experience of tofu! The waitress was friendly, and regular checked how we were doing. Coffee and cake is a must. Really easy being gluten free in a restaurant as good as this one.

Great food, friendly staff. It is lovely to be able to choose from different starters, mains and desserts, all vegan! Desserts are all very tempting, but the chocolate and nut cake chocolate/banana pot are very filling. If you're a keen dessert person, make sure to leave some space!
