Whether vegan, vegetarian or neither, chances are you’ve heard about Hendersons already. Now operating a handful of eateries around the city, Hendersons has been serving Edinburgh delicious food for half a century now. Long before veganism was in and being vegetarian was a buzzword, Hendersons had already perfected food according to their own philosophy: delicious, handmade, satisfying and healthy. That philosophy remains strong today, meaning that their groundbreaking Hendersons Vegan Restaurant on Thistle Street in the New Town isn’t just a trendy vegan joint, but rather a favourite, family-run restaurant where carnivores and others can enjoy seriously good food and a welcoming atmosphere.
The draw of Hendersons Vegan Restaurant is becoming strong far beyond Edinburgh, attracting curious diners from across the UK and the Continent, so it’s best to book ahead if you want a taste for yourself. Perhaps the jewel in the crown is their famous vegan haggis, but Hendersons offer a classy menu that stands alongside most elegant New Town restaurants anyhow, vegetarian or not. The smoked tofu has a complexity akin to a well marbled steak, a Moroccan pomegranate salad is bursting with fresh flavours, moreish marinated olives, quality garlic bread and fine wine make it easy to forget this Thistle Street restaurant is any different from other top eateries in Edinburgh.
Great tasty food with variety (had the teriyaki tofu and cashew nut cream cheese and carrot cake) , lovely welcoming environment, great and quick service
*Really* delicious lunch today at Hendersons vegan restaurant. First try of cashew cream cheese which I'll defo have to make at home. The lentil, coconut and chilli soup was also amazing.
Henderson's Vegan Restaurant had no record of our reservation from Quandoo, however they found us a table and we had a wonderful meal with excellent service. A very enjoyable experience.
Great food and relaxed atmosphere. Good price. What more to say? Great to have a properly vegan restaurant in Edinburgh. One of our favourite places.
Best meal I've had in a long time, and refreshing as a health conscious vegetarian to have so much choice! We had the sharing platter for 2, which was delicious, and I had the teriyaki tofu as a main which was unbelievable. The notella tart was really good too, and it was all light enough that I didn't feel totally stuffed after. The service was attentive without being annoying and I think we'll be back on a regular basis! Other restaurants take heed: food doesn't have to be creamy and stodgy to taste good!
Loved our meal at Hendersons. Only trouble was having to choose because everything sounded and looked so good. Between us we had lentil and coconut soup, which was wonderful and came with the most delicious bread; focaccia with tomato and onion - really fresh and tasty; Thai curry which was excellent; and chocolate cake with coconut cream to finish - also delicious and decadent but without feeling heavy. Great location, friendly and efficient service. Will definitely go back the next time we're in town.
Have been to the salad bar before and wanted to try the vegan restaurant for a while. I found the staff very friendly, and its nice being able to have a selection on the menu (as a vegan) that I didn't need to ask if it was suitable or not. On top of all that, the food is amazing! Would highly recommend
My wife and I have been to Hendersons 3 times now and have had an excellent time every time we have been, including this one. The drinks and food are both delicious, with a good variety of options, the turmeric latte this time was particularly good. Portion sizes are generous, and the prices are good as well, I would highly recommend visiting!
Hendersons Vegan Restaurant is a wonderful place to eat. Incredible food, fast service, and lovely customer service. I'm not vegan or vegetarian, and still found the food delicious.
Amazing place! Delicious food and the atmosphere is so chilled and peaceful. The food is always exceptional, delicious and good for you!! The soul bowl changes all the time to another delicious main meal and I could devour the zoodles for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hendersons vegan is a winner!
Turned up a little early, our table had just cleared, the table was quickly made up for us, Henderson's serves superb food, is in a great location and the service is fantastic. I will return and would recommend to anyone. Don't hesitate just book it, you will love it.
Delicious food, great service. The tofu teriyaki was delicious and filling, not like my previous experience of tofu! The waitress was friendly, and regular checked how we were doing. Coffee and cake is a must. Really easy being gluten free in a restaurant as good as this one.
Menu offered variety. Staff were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Restaurant newly refurbished, limited number of tables so booking ahead recommended. Service was reasonably quick. Food was fresh and tasty. Wine and beer was good if not a little pricey but probably as expected for city centre prices! Coffee was flavoursome and hot. Definitely go again, very enjoyable.
Lovely menu with lots of choice, nice décor and atmosphere, great service! The teriyaki tofu was a particular hit, along with the banana chocolate mousse special dessert. A must-go spot for Edinburgh vegans, and the vegan-curious. Very popular, so be sure to book in advance!
Henderson's is an exceptional restaurant. The food is fantastic, the staff is friendly, the setting is comfortable. My family and I ate at Henderson's five times during our recent two-week holiday in Scotland. Even if you're not a vegan, you'll love this place. Highly recommended.
Great little restaurant, with a great menu and delicious vegan food. All the dishes were very tasty and we weren't disappointed with the portion size either. The website doesn't make it clear that this is a separate restaurant from Henderson's and has it's own entrance (round the corner). Otherwise a good experience overall.
Lovely meal yet again. Both my mum and I had the tofu teriyaki, which was delicious. We even got a doggy bag to take what we couldn't manage home. We finished it off with coconut milk lattes and cakes. Great atmosphere, friendly service!
Two vegetarians interested in vegan; delightful staff; knowledgeable staff about the menu; excellent food. Fascinated by eg hazelnut milk and coconut ice cream - the latter being absolutely delicious. All in all a treat to repeat again and will certainly recommend to others.
We had a day out in edinburgh and wanted to book a meal I a vegan restaurant. Our search brought us to Hendersons and we weren't disappointed. The menu was varied with enough choice and our food was delicious. The service was exceptionally friendly too! We would definitely recommend eating here.
Hendersons is a lovely place chilled atmosphere great vegan food loved the polenta chips, courgette zoodles and teriyaki tofu dishes. Connor our waiter was excellent, friendly and helpful and recommended a bar to visit later which was a good tip.
The service was Efficient and friendly, and the place had good ambiance. The food was tasty and in a right portion. Hope I'll have a chance to go there again. The take away box was not well designed so my dessert I took away kept being exposed all the way, and found after arriving home it was in a mess....
Excellent as always. Love this restaurant. I wish there were more vegan places like this. We had 3 courses and drinks for a special lunch and the atmosphere was so chilled and relaxing we didn't want to leave.
Fantastic vegan meals, which were very rich and filling. Needed a little more time between starter-main-dessert, we needed some resting time! Service was fantastic but should be noted that service charge is already added, however we were informed of this when the bill came.
Though dish was a bit small for the price but light and refreshing, part of meal was cold but to.d it would be hot.. All tasted good though. Overall pleasant but tad expensive. Didn't like cake at all... Chocolate and hazelnut, too sweet and stodgy.never believe wait staff that tell you it's all lovely ;)
Our first visit (one vegan and one not) and we were both in heaven, cosy space, delicious food,it was so hard to decide what to choose - we need to return to try all the options!
We enjoyed our stay very much, the food was fantastic, all vegan which is an extra bonus, and the stuff is very friendly and helpful. We couldn't resist and had a desert, which was excellent too.
The food was really tasty and there was a good range of options. The friendly staff and nice décor created a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. I would definitely recommend to friends - vegan or not.
We really enjoyed the delicious food on offer. Although we are not vegan the change of style was great. The ambiance was relaxed and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Would certainly go again.
Lovely setting, delicious food. It's changed my view on vegan diets - I wouldn't even have noticed the delicious shepherds pie and chocolate mousse dessert didn't contain diary. Beautiful meal. V clever use of ingredients👍🏻
The restaurant is quite small and beautiful. Good staff and really tasty food. I ordered sweet potato and courguette with coconut sauce thinking that it was a hot meal, but it wasn't. It was lovely, anyway. We will go back, no dubt
1 vegan, 1 vegetarian and 2 carnivores had an absolutely delicious meal at Hendersons. Flavours were fab, as were the juices. Everyone very happy with their meal. Service was good and the menu was varied.
Food excellent. Service very poor. I believe they were starting new waiting staff on the night so there is some scope for leniency here, however even the senior member of staff handled errors very poorly. Only because of the excellent food I will return soon and hope for a better overall experience.
Amazing little restaurant tucked away down a cobbled side street.. Cute but cosy decoration, lovely friendly service and out of this world vegan food! The vegan haggis, root mash and red wine gravy 😍❤️
Fantastic vegan food in beautiful cosy restaurant. Menu was varied with a great choice, especially the desserts. Staff were helpful and friendly. Definitely not just for vegans - for anyone who loves delicious food!
We had a great time at Henderson. They serve large portions and have a great variety of soft drinks, alkohol and vegan coffees. Really sweet and friendly waitress. And good taste in music.
As a non vegan I found the food delicious, the service was first class and I would highly recommend this restaurant. This was my second time in Hendersons and I will definitely return.
Lovely restaurant. Wonderful food. Would definitely recommend. Pleasant staff. Whenever we visit Edinburgh we make a booking for this restaurant. Only a small restaurant so would recommend you to book in advance
Superb food - absolutely delicious - and it's so fab knowing that everything in this restaurant is vegan. Always enjoy the experience here and am looking forward to the next time already.
Nice place, friendly service. We had a good evening but the quality of the food wasn't that impressing. Udon noodles just drenched in sauce with little veg, Glow Bowl OK but not better than what I do at home. In summary OK, but not the greatest experience.
Went with a friend on 23 June, Lovely food and helpful staff. You are not rushed in any way. Quite a small restaurant. Very good service and would reccomend a visit.
Really lovely food, great drinks selection and great service, all bundled up in a warm and friendly atmosphere. We had the sharing platter to start, the fig tapenade is really unusual!
This was my second visit and it was just as great as the first. It will definitely be included in every future visit to Edinburgh! Wonderful food and very friendly service.
Amazing food and excellent service! Lots of choices! My favourite vegan restaurant. I don't live in Edinburgh but I travel here mainly for the vegan food! Vegan heaven! :) Highly recommended
Great menu, lots of choice. Fresh, tasty food and huge Portions. Lovely choice of deserts too. Service great, very friendly and nice relaxed atmosphere. Would love to have this in London
A brilliant restaurant! Very small and intimate setting - the staff were great, enthusiastic and knowledgeable! As a non-vegan, the food was delicious and I would recommend it to every one!!
Great food, the udon noodles were lovely. I dont think ive ever seen my girlfriend devour a meal quite like hendersons. The renovation since we were last in is really nice.
First time trying the Hendersons Vegan - really lovely new menu. Service was brilliant and the food was excellent. Ingredients are obviously fresh and the portions were generous too. Highly recommend the Buddha Bowl and the affogato.
I was quite disappointed overall. The food I received was watery, lacking in taste and a bit overpriced for what I got. The staff were friendly and helpful and I loved interior of the restaurant. I'd definitely go back again to see if it was just what I ordered but I don't think my visits will be a regular occurrence.
Delicious food (recommend the budda bowl) service with a smile and since the refurb lovely surroundings. It's hard to chose from the unusual sounding selection of dishes - veggie heaven
First class food, staff and setting. And they played Bob Marley for the duration, which was an additional bonus. Will return again at some point in the near future!
