Indian restaurants in St Albans are as good as any in Hertfordshire, and there can be few considered better than Mumtaj. They’ve been around since 1983 – we’d say the endorsement of generation of customers is as good a recommendation as there is – and they continue to keep the punters coming back time and again. It isn’t just St Albans locals, however. They’ve been garlanded with curry awards, from a continual listing in the Good Curry Guide, several Curry Chef of the Year gongs and even a European Food and Drink Award. It isn’t hard to see why: their combination of tandoori classics, vegetarian curries, spicy specialties and other Indian favourites is a winning one. We’d go for a house signature such as the Akbari Murgh, chicken medallions with fruit and a delicate ginger sauce, or the braised lamb shank in a Kashmiri-style sauce. Pay them a visit on London Road in St Albans town centre for a curry to remember.
