Fresh seafood and quality cuts of meats are the stars of the show at Edinburgh restaurant, Mussel and Steak Bar. Located in Old Town, this is a beautifully-styled restaurant that fits perfectly with the fine fare on offer. Here at West Bow, seafood and meat lovers will rejoice at the menu that is washed down perfectly with a bloody mary or mac mussel – an infusion of grouse whiskey, crabbies ginger wine and a hint of orange – or a wine of your choosing from the expertly-curated list.
The food is impeccable and the team behind Mussel and Steak Bar have outdone themselves entirely. There are starters of grilled mussels with herb or teriyaki butter, oysters from the Scottish Shetlands and Scottish blue shell mussel pots with your choice of sauce (chilli, ginger, cumin and lime or Thai red curry), as well as a dazzling steak menu. All, we assure you, are cooked to perfection and matured for minimum of 38 days and served with all the trimmings, making this Edinburgh restaurant a carnivore and seafood lovers delight. We also highly recommend sampling the seafood platter, but you’ll find Mussel and Steak Bar in Old Town where booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.
Came with my family on Saturday night and the staff were super polite and attentive! Amazing mussels - would definitely recommend the ones with bacon.
We had an excellent meal and there was a good atmosphere in the restaurant. Highlights were the oyster bloody mary shots and the picanha rump steak.
Absolutely delicious! We come from the pacific northwest, washington state, would highly recommend this restaurant to mussel lovers!! Great service and god location. Thanks for a wonderful experience.
We reserved a table for dinner. Food, ambiance, service--all very good! We ordered steak, mussels, and fish of the day. The steak was great; the mussels were tasty; and the fish of the day--roasted cod--was properly cooked. All in all, our dinner at Mussel & Steak was a pleasant one.
We were visiting from the US and this restaurant was recommended by the staff at the Apex Grassmarket Hotel. The first time we walked in, the place was jammed, so we made a reservation online, which worked great. The restaurant is very cozy and comfortable and the staff was very attentive and did not make us wait. After our seating the staff gave us a few minutes and then asked for our drink order. We found that in several restaurants we had to wait way to long for even placing our drink order............not here, it is well run and well staffed. The food was fantastic (great mussels and steaks....no kidding right) as was the deserts. To top it off the prices were very reasonable. We did eat lunch here as well. Everything was fantastic. We recommend it very highly.
We went for the lunch menu and it was fantastic! Warm welcome at the reception and shown to our table. The waiting staff were very attentive and polite. Starter - Haggis Wellington 10/10. Main - 1/2kg mussels with chips 10/10 ( love the mussells in this place and chips are devine ) Dessert - Sticky Toffee Parfait 10/10. This place is excellent, I cannot fault it, Great food at a great price and a great location. 3 Courses and a drink for 2 people £35.
We enjoyed a delicious meal, with attentive but not intrusive service. Just what we were looking for during our Scotland holiday. I would definitely recommend Mussel & Steak Bar and will thank the tour director who recommended it to us.
Visited the Mussel and Steak Bar for a birthday dinner last Sunday and found the place to be very mediocre. For starters we had the oysters which were lovely then followed by the mussels which were also nice but a touch spicy. For the main we ordered the seafood platter which was a disappointment. The 'Platter' consisted mainly of mussels with one queen scallop and 2 prawns and approx. 4 cockles. We mentioned this to the waiter who simply shrugged and agreed with us. Would I dine at the Mussel and Steak again??...probably not! There are better restaurants around that provide better value for money at the same cost or cheaper!
Our party of four all thorough enjoyed the meal and service that was provided. Starters tasted great with the Haggis and mussels for 2 of us. 4 steaks and chips that were cooked to our order, season well and presented lovely. Desserts were tasty with not a crumb left in sight. Servers were very friendly and couldn't have done anymore for us on the night.
Enjoyed a surf and turf. Both were cooked perfectly to order and because it's seafood, it was out at the table relatively quickly! (especially helpful when there is a fussy toddler whining to go home). The desserts were also phenomenal. (The amount of food is just enough to leave room for dessert) There was a lovely irish cream chese cake and one of the best banoffee pies I've ever had the pleasure of.
I had the mussels in white wine, shallots, garlic and cream, and they were absolutely fantastic! There were almost too many for me to eat. Excellent value for money. My companions each had a steak, two different types, which they really enjoyed. Would definitely recommend as the atmosphere is very relaxed, the service is friendly, and the food is brilliant.
The food is very good and the service, a little slow, but we weren't in a hurry. However the menu did not seem as varied or interesting as it has been in the past which was disappointing. We did miss out on there being specials which may have been a part of that? I thought 1pm on a Saturday was a bit late to be deciding specials for the day.
Wonderful experience! We reserved a table during their lunch hour for the 3-course option. The cheerful staff served delectable haggis with whiskey sauce and a tasty smoked salmon starter, followed by a sizable pot of delicious mussels and finely prepared beef, all with perfectly fried chips. The toffee dessert was a sweet ending. A completely positive experience!
Excellent mussels. The crab meat lasagna appetizer was very tasty, too. The steak was also good, but we enjoyed the mussels more. Convivial atmosphere. Service was relatively efficient, but please be a bit more patient during busy hours. We had such a good dinner there the first time that we went back for lunch again a second time during our two-week holiday in Scotland.
Ordered 2 separate options of mussels in pot , the first pot was below par . Gave it a second chance , second pot was up to expectation in terms of freshness , taste and size with lots of shallots. The Picanha Rump , oysters on ice and queen scallops were upto expectation .
The service was prompt but somewhat curt, perhaps due to our 9:00 pm reservation time. The feta olive & tomato salad was perfectly dressed & seasoned. Our mussels were very fresh and sweet. I would have preferred more sauce on my Thai chili mussels, our daughter's cream & shallot mussels were also tasty. Husband enjoyed his Rib eye steak & chips very much.
Excellent food and service. Staff were friendly and there was a good choice of food to select from the menu. We were at a table for six so did feel slightly cramped upstairs but otherwise we had a lovely evening.
Lovely night, brilliant staff and fantastic food. We had starters, mains and desserts, but it just missed that little extra, portion wise, to have us leaving satifiedly full. Other than that, overall it is a place I would definitely recommend. Thank you, again, for a lovely night!
Great little place just off the grass market. We both had what it says on the shop front, mussels and steak and it was delish!! The chips are the best in Edinburgh!! Couldn't fault the service either. Highly recommended.
Service was great. Food was mostly good, steak was tasty but tougher than I would expect for the price and the pepper sauce was very bland - just tasted like single cream with ground black pepper. Chips are excellent as are the mussels. I think they could do better for the price that they charge.
