Every now and then a restaurant comes along in Shoreditch that really gets people talking. One such restaurant is Pickled Fred, an Asian-inspired haunt with a focus on small food that’s booming with big flavour alongside interesting cocktails. On Hanbury Street, not far from Old Spitalfields Market, Pickled Fred is run by three friends who share a love of Asian food and the continent itself, meaning they’ve put together a menu that’s not only completely unique from any other in this part of London, but healthy, responsible and ridiculously tasty as well. Pickled Fred is an Asian restaurant to get excited about and reservations are essential.
Pickled Fred has become a must-visit restaurant for us when we are in London. The staff is friendly and helpful, the cocktails are creative and scrumptious, and the food is wonderful! The Smoked Goat cocktail is our favorite as we like both tequila and mezcal and they combine them with fruit juice to accomplish something special. The lotus root chips as a starter can't be beat and we *always* have the octopus - it's cooked perfectly and spiced to perfection. (We now get two plates of this so we don't have to share!) New on the menu for us this time were the duck breast with pickled plum puree and a new flatbread with lamb kofte. Having learn our limits the last time we were here, we only had the duck and it is a worthy addition to the menu - cooked just right, it is very tasty and the tart pickled plum puree brings out the flavor of the duck in engaging ways. If you are in London, Pickle Fred is the place to eat!
Very nice food, providing something different to the norm. Would definitely go back and make use of the 6 cocktails before 7pm! Great service too.
Food was amazing , service spot on and very informative and friendly , lovely relaxed atmosphere , new fav restaurant , cocktails beautiful , will be coming back on our next visit to London
Ben, Can and Dan are the men behind this restaurant, and knowing that, you may be wondering where the name Pickled Fred comes from. Well, Fred is a monkey that Ben and Can met on their trip to Philippines. Fred was a monkey that stole pickles and, unknowingly, inspired this buzzing, quirky restaurant in the heart of London’s Shoreditch. Funny old world, isn’t it? But the pickles don’t stop there. They also feature heavily on the food menu and the cocktail list, both of which are fantastic. Hanbury Street is calling, folks, because Pickled Fred is cooking.
The food menu consists of Asian-style snacks, small plates and flatbreads, many of which are vegan, dairy-free or gluten-free but still laced with fantastic flavour. Hungry folk from all over London flock to Spitalfields to snack on jackfruit scotch egg with masala mayo, coconut-braised pork belly bao and lotus root crisps with wasabi and avocado. Small plates go as far as grilled octopus or beef shin & bone marrow rendang with pickled chilli and crispy shallots, while flatbreads or chickpea pancakes come topped with all sorts of vibrant delights. We told you this wasn’t your ordinary Asian food. We also suspect your mouth is likely watering now… Enjoy!
