The latest culinary adventure in Mayfair by Russian restaurateur Aklady Novikov (of Novikov fame) proves that this time, his formula for fabulous Mayfair dining has been well and truly nailed in Rextail on Albemarle Street. This chic restaurant focuses on the kind of food befitting its W1 address: there’s generous, juicy meats, perfect chips, a smattering of salads and fish, and not much else. This is a restaurant that knows which side its (made fresh) bread is buttered.
Rextail is pretty much next to RADA on Albemarle Street in Mayfair and there could hardly be a more fitting location for this dramatic, punchy restaurant. The service is everything you would expect from Mr. Novikov’s restaurants: it is slick, smart and enthusiastic. The menu pays tribute to a number of international dishes, and hence there’s a good selection of pasta and risotto. But the big draw, if you discount the opportunity to see Mayfair’s jet set in their natural habitat, is the meat. The meat comes from the charcoal-fired grill and features a cut or two of the much feted Wagyu beef. If you are looking for something less heavy, there’s good salads and fish courses that keep things interesting by introducing unfamiliar combinations – we’re fans of the miso marinated black cod with radicchio.
The restaurant is jauntily made up – expect velvet covered seating and a heap of cutlery when you arrive. There’s also something of a hipster-kitsch vibe going on here too, complete with (presumably) faux-moose head mounted on the wall. Guests are heading here to see and be seen, as well as for plates of the kind of food you can only find in W1 – unashamedly indulgent, rich and above all else impressive. Get off at Green Park (Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria lines), or, let’s be honest, get a cab or if you’re a real high-roller your driver and head over to Rextail on Albemarle Street for a night of serious food in Mayfair.
very gracious staff, excellent food with interesting twists to simple ingredients - and don't miss Napoleon on its solitary island, the star of all dessert battle grounds...
Wonderful overall experience. Both, the food and service were top notch. The staff was attentive and offered great recommendations on the food and wine. Would definitely go back again soon.
As always, perfect steak! Brilliant wine and excellent atmosphere. Great meal, cannot recommend strongly enough!
Excellent restaurant, relaxed atmosphere and great food! What more could you want! I have been here several times and never been disappointed with the food...the truffle and Parmesan chips are amazing!
Overcharged on the bill - the second time this has happened to me at a Novikov establishment - and on my second visit. The food was decent - obviously well sourced ingredients but overpriced for such simply prepared food. I doubt I will go again to Novikov, Rextail or any other of this groups restaurants.
Great food, really poor service. Very slow and rather Fawlty Towers when it came to dessert as we were presented with a bowl of figs instead of peaches and then told that, while it said peaches on the menu, it was a fig dish. Then it was suggested that there might be peaches after all but these turned out to be plums. The explanations as to which ice creams weren't available and the difference between peaches and figs were all rather surreal!
Rextail restaurant was absolutely delicious. The food was fantastic and the staff were brilliant. A nice, quiet, well decorated restaurant. We had a wonderful evening there.
Wine was very expensive and poor quality. Menus said in big bold writing "GROUPON MENU @ £45" which I felt was almost a name and shame. I ordered the sea ads which was frankly bland and lacked flavour and was even burned. That being said, the service was outstanding, the starter and desert were fantastic and my partner had a very good main. She ordered the lamb shoulder and it looked delicious.
The food and atmosphere were wonderful, although the service was very slow and lacking, especially since we were there early and it was still quiet/rather empty. The staff were not the best at picking up when someone wanted their attention. Otherwise, the food arrived promptly and was cooked perfectly. Drinks are overpriced, so be careful when ordering!
Good ambience. Attentive, friendly service. The wine, Rioja as recommended, was a perfect accompaniment to our food order. Only issue was that one of our fillet steaks was very fatty and had to be returned - this was dealt with very swiftly, and without any disagreement. At £240 for 2 diners (with 2 bottles of wine) the 2-course meal was on the expensive side otherwise would have rated this as 5
