About The Royal McGregor
Situated right on The Royal Mile in Edinburgh’s Old Town, this pub is as traditionally Scottish as you’d expect for such a location. It’s not all haggis and whisky here though (although the haggis and whisky are great) – The Royal McGregor is committed to offering a taste of Scottish culture at its broadest and finest. Located on High Street and popular with tourists and locals alike, The Royal McGregor gets pretty packed so book your table in advance to avoid disappointment!

With its location on The Royal Mile, The Royal McGregor is the perfect place to unwind after a day spent sightseeing, but with its high quality cuisine it’s as equally as popular with Edinburgh locals too. Tuck into some traditional Scottish food like the famous haggis, or opt for another classic like salmon Wellington (a Scottish salmon fillet in a white wine and parsley cream encased in puff pastry with new potatoes and seasonal vegetables). For a Scottish take on an international favourite, go for the Highland burger topped with haggis and whisky sauce.
With an impressive selection of over 90 malts it would be rude visit The Royal McGregor and not have a wee dram or two, or three… but if whisky isn’t your poison you can just as easily sink some hand-pulled cask ales or sip on a cocktail instead. Whether it’s for dinner or drinks, The Royal McGregor pulls in crowds with its prime location on High Street along The Royal Mile. Make a reservation at this Old Town favourite for an authentic Scottish experience in the beating heart of Edinburgh!
Lovely friendly hotel and excellent accommodation . Very friendly staff and very helpful . Rooms extremely well designed and very very tidy and clean and spacious
Excellent food, drinks and service. Convenient location on the Royal Mile. Second time there and will certainly be returning next time I'm staying in Edinburgh.
The food was really nice and the staff helpful and friendly. Plus it is on the Royal Mile but the prices are very competitive. Would definitely go again
Loved the Royal McGregor. The ambience was great, the service was wonderful, and the food was delicious. We especially liked the haggis bites with pepper sauce, very bold flavor.
My wife and I really enjoyed our experience at The Royal McGregor last night. Food was excellent and the service superb and it was very good value for the money. We will be happy to recommend The Royal McGregor to our friends.
We were three and all of us had Haggis, one of us rhe vegitarian. It was realy very good and the meat and vega ones were almost simular. The service was very attentive. Wanna try Haggis, go to The Royal McGregor and ask a flight of 4 different malts to go with it. Too much? Share one flight together.
This is my favourite restaurant in Edinburgh. A trip up here for me or any member of my family would be incomplete unless we eat here. It is cosy, friendly, always has a lovely buzz about it and the food is really good, Can recommend the haggis fritters for starters. Then Crofters Chicken, a haggis tower or the duo of pork for mains. Every order is taken and then served with a smile. Have already booked a table for another visit later in the year. We have recommended this restaurant to lots of people and they always say how much they enjoyed it.
Beautiful restaurant atmosphere is welcoming and friendly Food is out of this world, this is how Scottish food should be done 😊 James his wife and their team do a brilliant job can't fault them We've been many times we had our wedding dinner here so holds a special place for us we visited with my aunt and uncle who couldn't make our wedding and the also love the place. We will be back again very soon Thanks for having us
The haggis fritters were the best! Ive tried haggis a couple of different ways since I've been here and the fritters were by far the best. The tennents beer was also great, the seating allowed us to talk to the couples at the tables close to us, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was nice. The food was served quickly and the food was hot! You could tell our food was brought out as soon as it finished cooking!
It is a very nice and cosy pub in the heart of Edinburgh, very close to the castle. The food tastes great and the portions are enormous. Personally, I recommend fried Haggis as a starter, it is just so yummy. A great variety of beers and Scotch Whisky is offered as well. I recommend, to get a reservations, as it's a very popular pub and tends to get busy around dinner time. I will definitely come back!
Brilliant wee place in the centre of town. Food piping hot, efficient service, staff friendly and prices reasonable for High Street in Edinburgh. I would recommend the haggis fritters - a combination of food I would not put together myself but it worked! My husband loved the steak - cooked too perfection Great to see so many tourists in for a meal too! Will be back soon
Only had a main course due to being overfed during the festive period however the food was good and the service OK, the only negative thing was my partner asked for a cinzano bianco to drink and the waitress did not know what this was so she settled for a white wine. Other than that a good experience as we had never been in the bar before although we live just 10 minuets away, probably go back at some point.
My steak and ale pie was delicious. The chips though were frozen and a bit taste less but the pie made up for that. My dad had the ribeye steak he said it was not work £23.00 it was full of grisel, the onion rings were too oily and again frozen chips. Other then that, the staff were lovely and the house white wine was very nice. We won't be returning through the food just wasn't as good as the first time we tried this resturant.
To be honest I booked the Royal McGregor at random as I was going to a concert at Edinburgh Castle, but I'm glad I did. The service was great, the food was outstanding, and we'll definitely be back. Really good selection of beers, too. Tempted to go to Edinburgh just to go back to the Royal McGregor.
It is the third time we have visited the Royal McGregor, in the past 2 two years we have visited Edinburgh. Each time the staff were very attentive and very polite. The food on each occasion was very good. and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I would recommend anyone to try this restaurant
All around wonderful experience! The menu has a wide variety of options for breakfast/brunch, lunch and dinner. They also have a great variety of desserts and beverages. The food and drink we had were all fantastic. The staff were all attentive, generous, and competent. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting. I'd probably go back once or twice every week if I had the chance.
Great atmosphere and very helpful, pleasant staff. Good choice on menu. We went for the 2 course offer at a great price of £14. Food was delicious and server was attentive throughout. All in all a very enjoyable experience and we definitely plan on a return visit in the not too distant future.
The service was great, really nice staff and the food was great as well. It was a lot! The table was ready when we arrive and the everything was very efficient and absolutely not rushed. Among our group we especially enjoyed the haggis fritters, sirloin steak, salmon wellington and crannachan.
Amazing dinner and atmosphere in the heart of Edinburghs old town. Steak pie is the best in Scotland and even better than my mums..... Been here for dinner many times, breakfast on occasion and have honestly never had a bad meal. Scotland at its best!
Booked online for dinner, lovely meals, can highly recommend the steak and ale pie and the crofters chicken, had to try a sweet as I'd never had the crannachan before and they had my husbands favourite, sticky toffee pudding. Good friendly and efficient service.
Great food and good ales and whiskies. Varied menu including traditional Scottish favourites. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. Seriously recommend the best Cranachan and I have ever tasted. Great location too at the heart of Edinburgh's Royal Mile.
Great place to eat!. Food and ale were wonderful, and staff was very friendly. It was the first time in my life that I had haggis, and I was not disappointed. We had a great time. Thank you so much!
My second visit to this small treasure...love the food in here. Haggis stack is beautiful with the steaks and home made chips coming a close second! Well worth a visit if you're in Edinburgh and want reasonably priced good food.
Very tasty. Good value for money and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to be filled up. The opening times on the website is wrong though, they don't actually open till 10 not 9:30. But was very good.
Food & service was good. Decided to eat here after looking online however I was disappointed when we arrived to find the menu was different to the one on the website! (no Pork Duo......the very thing that made us choose this restaurant) This resulted in us having to order something different from what we had originally wanted.
Very nice central location in the old town. The waitress was wonderful, very friendly and explaining all the dishes and meals. She also spoke Spanish. The rest of staff are also very friendly. The food was very good except my sandwich, as the bread was dry and a little chewy and made it difficult to eat.
Superb haggis, in fact the best I have ever had! I will definitely be back to this great little pub. My wife also said the chicken was superb too. Not pricey at all but very good value.
Our visit was fantastic - they had set up a lovely table for us for my husband's birthday and even gave him a drink on the house. Great food and lovely welcoming staff. Thanks so much!
Warm, cosy restaurant with a lovely atmosphere. Staff were very welcoming and the service was great. The food was fantastic and the prices were just right. Will definitely be going back to the restaurant soon!
The staff were lovely and attentive even though the restaurant was really busy. The food came reasonably quickly and tasted great. The table was a bit of a tight squeeze for the 4 of us but that's the only negative remark
Lovely food and great location on the royal mile. Decor isn't as fancy as some places but suited us perfectly and was reasonably priced. With the exception of one slightly rude member of staff, service was great. Would return again.
had a super Christmas Lunch today at the Royal McGregor. Good food and friendly service in pleasant surroundings. really enjoyed it and will be back soon to try out the regular menu!
This is the second time that we have visited the Royal McGregor but the first time that we have had breakfast. It was excellent! Terrific value for money and yummy. Highly recommended.
Excellent food, atmosphere, and staff with a great location! Would absolutely recommend to anyone. Had the short ribs and the salmon dishes, absolutely delicious! Make sure to eat here, you won't regret!
The food was very good and friendly staff. Many options of foods and drink. Nice location and easy to get there, good place to have dinner and than go out because is near from good pubs and bars.
Well worth a visit. Attentive and efficient service and good innovative food. The vegetarians amongst us are well catered for (recommend the veggie haggis tower!). Overall a good vibe and will definitely go again when next in town.
4th time been for a meal and also taken relatives that were visiting from England. Been for drinks only a few time too. Lovely service from all who have served us.
We enjoyed our evening at Royal McGregor. We found Good food and some very friendly and helpful staff. When we come back to Edinburgh we'll be back to the Royal McGregor.
The food was good, the staff was gentle and they helped us to choose our beers. They let us taste the beers at the beginning to be sure we like them.
Absolutely amazing place friendly staff and incredible tasty food highly recommend. Hidden away despite on main street. Good competitive prices and portion sizes are big. Whisky and beer selection very large
Was my 1st ever visit with a party of 4 and we all loved it. Food was superb and staff very pleasant and nothing was too much trouble. Will be back.
Always a great atmosphere and food! We visit here regularly when family are in town looking for a traditional Scottish experience and they always love it. Steak pie is the best!
The food easy very good. The staff very helpful. Very reasonably priced for the centre of edinburgh centrally located for the attractions on the royal mile. Would definitely go again.
Excellent food, great service. Lovely little Scottish restaurant on the Royal Mile. Friendly and attentive staff. We've been coming here for around 8 years now after discovering it on groupon.
Cosy little pub along a heavily Touristy road. Food was delicious and the service friendly and inviting. Large selection of drinks and a good selection of food. Would definitely return
Loved the quaint atmosphere. We had a great, beer- Innis & Gunn IPA, along with Haggis Tower and a Crofters Chicken breast stuffed with haggis- both dishes came with whisky sauce and were very tasty.
Excellent service, great food especially the crofters chicken. Recommend booking as it gets very busy. A gem on the Royal Mile would highly recommend if you are visiting Edinburgh.
Great service, nice atomosphere and good food. Steaks were really good (burgers not as much but still good). We had my sister's birthday meal here and she loved it.
The staff were all very friendly, helpful and accommodating. The food was delicious and the restaurant had a lovely ambiance. I've been before and would gladly go back again.
A great little place situated on the Royal Mile. The best haggis I have ever tasted. Superb whiskey selection. The staff are friendly and polite. Definitely worth a visit.
