About The Royal McGregor
Situated right on The Royal Mile in Edinburgh’s Old Town, this pub is as traditionally Scottish as you’d expect for such a location. It’s not all haggis and whisky here though (although the haggis and whisky are great) – The Royal McGregor is committed to offering a taste of Scottish culture at its broadest and finest. Located on High Street and popular with tourists and locals alike, The Royal McGregor gets pretty packed so book your table in advance to avoid disappointment!

With its location on The Royal Mile, The Royal McGregor is the perfect place to unwind after a day spent sightseeing, but with its high quality cuisine it’s as equally as popular with Edinburgh locals too. Tuck into some traditional Scottish food like the famous haggis, or opt for another classic like salmon Wellington (a Scottish salmon fillet in a white wine and parsley cream encased in puff pastry with new potatoes and seasonal vegetables). For a Scottish take on an international favourite, go for the Highland burger topped with haggis and whisky sauce.
With an impressive selection of over 90 malts it would be rude visit The Royal McGregor and not have a wee dram or two, or three… but if whisky isn’t your poison you can just as easily sink some hand-pulled cask ales or sip on a cocktail instead. Whether it’s for dinner or drinks, The Royal McGregor pulls in crowds with its prime location on High Street along The Royal Mile. Make a reservation at this Old Town favourite for an authentic Scottish experience in the beating heart of Edinburgh!
Excellent filling food, massive portions, and fantastic service from the staff. The haggis tower is delicious, and the gin flight was an excellent addition to the night.
Excellent service and food..would definitely recommend..lovely little place a little bit pricey but definitely worth the money..I'd I am ever in Edinburgh again I would definitely visit.
Great food, great service and great atmosphere! Although it was very busy when we went (Festival time) the staff could not have been more helpful even though they were rushed off their feet!
Excellent. Service was friendly and attentive. Food was cooked to perfection (we had Aberdeen Angus sirloin and BBQ beef ribs). Wines were fine. Overall a very enjoyable and satisfying experience. Highly recommend.
My wife and I really enjoyed our experience at The Royal McGregor last night. Food was excellent and the service superb and it was very good value for the money. We will be happy to recommend The Royal McGregor to our friends.
We were three and all of us had Haggis, one of us rhe vegitarian. It was realy very good and the meat and vega ones were almost simular. The service was very attentive. Wanna try Haggis, go to The Royal McGregor and ask a flight of 4 different malts to go with it. Too much? Share one flight together.
This is my favourite restaurant in Edinburgh. A trip up here for me or any member of my family would be incomplete unless we eat here. It is cosy, friendly, always has a lovely buzz about it and the food is really good, Can recommend the haggis fritters for starters. Then Crofters Chicken, a haggis tower or the duo of pork for mains. Every order is taken and then served with a smile. Have already booked a table for another visit later in the year. We have recommended this restaurant to lots of people and they always say how much they enjoyed it.
Beautiful restaurant atmosphere is welcoming and friendly Food is out of this world, this is how Scottish food should be done 😊 James his wife and their team do a brilliant job can't fault them We've been many times we had our wedding dinner here so holds a special place for us we visited with my aunt and uncle who couldn't make our wedding and the also love the place. We will be back again very soon Thanks for having us
The haggis fritters were the best! Ive tried haggis a couple of different ways since I've been here and the fritters were by far the best. The tennents beer was also great, the seating allowed us to talk to the couples at the tables close to us, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was nice. The food was served quickly and the food was hot! You could tell our food was brought out as soon as it finished cooking!
It is a very nice and cosy pub in the heart of Edinburgh, very close to the castle. The food tastes great and the portions are enormous. Personally, I recommend fried Haggis as a starter, it is just so yummy. A great variety of beers and Scotch Whisky is offered as well. I recommend, to get a reservations, as it's a very popular pub and tends to get busy around dinner time. I will definitely come back!
Brilliant wee place in the centre of town. Food piping hot, efficient service, staff friendly and prices reasonable for High Street in Edinburgh. I would recommend the haggis fritters - a combination of food I would not put together myself but it worked! My husband loved the steak - cooked too perfection Great to see so many tourists in for a meal too! Will be back soon
Only had a main course due to being overfed during the festive period however the food was good and the service OK, the only negative thing was my partner asked for a cinzano bianco to drink and the waitress did not know what this was so she settled for a white wine. Other than that a good experience as we had never been in the bar before although we live just 10 minuets away, probably go back at some point.
My steak and ale pie was delicious. The chips though were frozen and a bit taste less but the pie made up for that. My dad had the ribeye steak he said it was not work £23.00 it was full of grisel, the onion rings were too oily and again frozen chips. Other then that, the staff were lovely and the house white wine was very nice. We won't be returning through the food just wasn't as good as the first time we tried this resturant.
To be honest I booked the Royal McGregor at random as I was going to a concert at Edinburgh Castle, but I'm glad I did. The service was great, the food was outstanding, and we'll definitely be back. Really good selection of beers, too. Tempted to go to Edinburgh just to go back to the Royal McGregor.
It is the third time we have visited the Royal McGregor, in the past 2 two years we have visited Edinburgh. Each time the staff were very attentive and very polite. The food on each occasion was very good. and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I would recommend anyone to try this restaurant
All around wonderful experience! The menu has a wide variety of options for breakfast/brunch, lunch and dinner. They also have a great variety of desserts and beverages. The food and drink we had were all fantastic. The staff were all attentive, generous, and competent. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting. I'd probably go back once or twice every week if I had the chance.
Great atmosphere and very helpful, pleasant staff. Good choice on menu. We went for the 2 course offer at a great price of £14. Food was delicious and server was attentive throughout. All in all a very enjoyable experience and we definitely plan on a return visit in the not too distant future.
The service was great, really nice staff and the food was great as well. It was a lot! The table was ready when we arrive and the everything was very efficient and absolutely not rushed. Among our group we especially enjoyed the haggis fritters, sirloin steak, salmon wellington and crannachan.
Amazing dinner and atmosphere in the heart of Edinburghs old town. Steak pie is the best in Scotland and even better than my mums..... Been here for dinner many times, breakfast on occasion and have honestly never had a bad meal. Scotland at its best!
Booked online for dinner, lovely meals, can highly recommend the steak and ale pie and the crofters chicken, had to try a sweet as I'd never had the crannachan before and they had my husbands favourite, sticky toffee pudding. Good friendly and efficient service.
