In the Lundwood neighbourhood of Barnsley, there’s one Italian restaurant that you can count on for quality, flavour and service – we’re talking about San Livio, a dining establishment that’s the perfect option for dinner on Grange Lane. Situated inside of an historic water mill dating from around the year 1150, this Italian restaurant provides a unique experience for local diners and tourists alike. With live events held on the regular, San Livio offers more than just dinner and drinks. Reservations are highly recommended.
Overpriced. Poor quality food and drinks. Dirty cutlery. Toilets disgusting. Waiter entertaining so only reason why I gave it a score. Would not go again.
Absolutely terrible! The restaurant has been taken over recently and what a difference! We were greeted by a man behind the bar wearing a scruffy sweatshirt. The staff were all sat around chatting and we were the only 2 people in the restaurant! I asked for a wine list to be told they didnt have one. The waitress ( the bosses daughter) brought two half open bottles and a karaff of wine to the able. She allowed us to try the wine and we chose the one in the karaff. She left us with the wine and returned 5 minutes later with another one and left it on the table with no words to explain why. We set it to one side as we had not requested it. When ordering the food we were told that there was no veal, no lamb shank, no salmon. When out food arrived the chicken was dry, brown and curled at the end. The restaurant was cold and noisy with the sound of waitresses giggling and chatting being a constant throughout the duration of the meal. The dessert menu was a half rubbed out, scribbled on chalk board with three choices (including icecream) to which we politely declined. We had an after dinner drink and asked for the bill which took 10 minutes to arrive despite still being the only 2 people in the restaurant! We wanted to pay on debit card however the boss requested that we pay him by direct bank transfer as their card machine wasnt working! I ended up having to log on to my online banking just to be able to leave the restaurant!!!! Ive never experienced anything quite like it!!! To top it off, when I got home and checked the reciept, they had charged me for the 2 karaffs of wine! Absolutely terrible from start to finish. I cannot believe that a restaurant as beautiful as this can change so much.
Dirty cutlery and glasses. Only one steak left in the restaurant. Asked about specials - waitress had to go read the board herself. Ordered Muscles in spicy tomato sauce - got muscles in white wine (not even shown on the menu). Wanted the veal off the menu - told the chef doesn’t want to serve them as doesn’t agree with selling them. Food received was actually fairly nice and reasonably priced. Overall the place is quite run down and could be amazing with some investment. When coming to pay the card machine wasn’t working. Customers were having to go out and get cash to pay. Not the best night on the whole and probably won’t return unless under new ownership.
The premises alone are enough to make San Livio the talk of South Yorkshire. A refurbished water mill in Lundwood dating from the 12th century, this Barnsley restaurant on Grange Lane is a history lover’s dream, and is also a treat for architecture aficionados or those who simply like a cosy feel. With exposed beams and stone walls, the restaurant is both stunning and incredibly relaxed. Also ideal for private functions, the entire restaurant is bookable for weddings, christenings, birthday celebrations and corporate events.
San Livio serves up classic Italian cuisine, putting an emphasis on fresh ingredients and time-honoured recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. Chef Livio is truly an expert, and his pizzas are out of this world – try the Rustica with mozzarella, tomato and Mediterranean vegetables for a delightful option. From the mains, we recommend the gourmet agnello Romano, a lamb shank served atop mashed potatoes, topped with a red wine rosemary sauce. And from the pasta options, you can’t go wrong with the penne amatriciana, penne cooked with bacon onion and tomato. San Livio is one of Lundwood and Barnsley’s most popular restaurants – do yourself a favour and book a table in advance!
