Sapporo Ichiban is for many Lewisham and Catford locals the number one destination for Japanese cuisine in southeast London. With well-thumbed menus clocking in at over a dozen pages, this Catford Broadway restaurant is truly an encyclopaedic tribute to Japanese culinary culture. The side dishes alone comprise a short romantic novel to the pleasures of East Asian eating, but we urge diners to plough on and take in the many types of dishes on offer here.
Lovely Japanese restaurant in South London, an absolute gem, the food is delicious and great service too in a very atmospheric setting.
Food was ok but service terrible. Took over 2 hours to get served. Food arrived at random intervals. Admittedly they had a large party to serve but communication was poor. Not good enough I'm afraid.
The food is delicious and there is a huge variety, however service can be a bit slow but if you know this and set aside an evening then it's brilliant!
It’s a popular pastime among Catford locals to pop in to Sapporo Ichiban down Catford Broadway for either a couple of yakitori skewers and a drink, sarariman-style, or to grab an express (and affordable lunch) from the set menu options. Here, at one of Lewisham and southeast London’s favourite dinky Japanese restaurants, you can get a combo of the Sapporo hot platter (ebi yaki, yasai katsu, crab stick tempura, vegetable rolls) with beef teriyaki or king prawn teriyaki plus rice for under a tenner. Or, go luxurious with the grand C selection, with the Sapporo Boat sushi set, tempura sushi, and the Asian-European fusion novelty of the salmon sushi pizza. It’s not traditional, but it’s a damn fine example of international culinary relations.
A fine sashimi and jyu (sashimi served on sushi rice with miso soup) selection is available at this favoured Lewisham Japanese restaurant, too, with curious cuts like the octopus and surf clam offering less well-known options to raw fish foodies. The Catford roll is a cute homage to Sapporo Ichiban’s home, featuring prawn tempura and cucumber with mayonnaise (what must they think of this corner of London?). The very hungry head to Catford Broadway to take in Sapporo Ichiban’s pan fried noodles, udon, and hearty rice dishes, with the vegetarian yasai chilli noodle or rice being a popular, spicy, and all-too-affordable must-have.
