If you’d like to reserve larger tables for group bookings, please contact the restaurant directly to discuss your requirements.
If you’re a Saffacionado, you need to get on down to Dalry Road, where you can get your fill at Shebeen. They fire up the traditional braai to bring you steaks seared just right, as well as plenty of boerewors and other highlights from the Highveld. They give the South African treatment to locally-sourced ingredients with aplomb, and the crowds that come from all over Edinburgh to taste their wares. Try the Bunny chow, a South African fast food made by filling a hollowed-out bread loaf with a delicious Durban-style curry, and is guaranteed to give native South Africans a nostalgic taste of home. Steak heads will also be pleasantly surprised as Shebeen serves up some of the best steaks in Edinburgh, so head on over to Dalry Road – just around the corner from Haymarket station – and Shebeen.
Shebeen is famous for flipping only the finest, premium aged steaks over to the grill, and the same rule applies at the Haymarket branch up on Dalry Road, with masses of the meat-eating men and women of Edinburgh flocking to the restaurant’s colourful premises. There are plenty of hard-to-find but easy-to-drink South African beers and wines on offer (choose a classic, solid red if you’re planning on heading steakwards), and take a look at what the braai (the South African barbecue) can offer up for lunch or dinner or both.
If you’re up for sharing what Shebeen Dalry Road describes as a bucket of meat, go for the fanagalo, a mixed grill platter heaped with traditional South African meatballs (frikadelle), barbecued spare ribs, homemade boerewors sausage, grilled pork belly and grilled skewers of beef or pork sosaties. Here near Haymarket, a recommended Shebeen favourite for seafood lovers are the wild caught prawns (try saying that in with a Saffa accent!) cooked with white wine, chilli and garlic. But if you really want to go the whole hog, so to speak, do what so many Edinburgh diners have done and opt for a Shebeen steak. Aged for 35 days and rubbed with a secret spice mix, you can choose from lion- or cheetah-sized rump, sirloin on the bone, ribeye with rimmings, T-bone or fillet steaks with either Monkey Gland (no kidding) sauce or Chakalaka relish.
Good food, good service and nice atmosphere. Would highly recommend it!
I have been quite a few times to Shebeen and have never been disappointed!
Quick and friendly service. The food and drinks hit the spot! The staff are more than willing to explain the dishes should you be new to the 'South African' experience. Will definitely be back.
Food fantastic, tasty, loved all the different flavours, although there is no kids menu there are foods from the menu you can share with your kids
Get off your horse, get on your phone and book yourself and everyone you know a table for dinner at Shebeens. OMG!! Who knew????????? It was brilliant in every aspect, service, food and ambiance. I had the lamb bunny chow (curry) which was served in a loaf of bread with a side salad of onion tomato and......(wait for it) BANANA!!! Culinary revolution there let me tell you!! Other half had the biggest bbq chicken wings I've ever seen and the Malva pudding.....aw man, you've not lived till you have it. Take my advice and go....NOW!!!!
This was our first visit to Shebeen (Dalry Road). The table was ready and the staff very friendly and welcoming. A carnivore's delight and cooked just how we requested. Really tasty food and great service. However, as the portion sizes are so generous, our only criticism is that we would have preferred a longer gap between courses, in order to digest. However, our server did respond positively when we asked for a break before selecting our desserts. Will definitely return. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Food was fantastic as always and great value for money. Only thing that let it down this time was some of the staff. You'd think it would kill to crack a smile and be welcoming, so I felt a little awkward and uncomfortable at first. It's not happened before so I wouldn't let it affect my score, hopefully it was a one-off! Otherwise, it was great and I will continue to go back and recommend friends. Definitely go if you can!
My girlfriend and I had a great night at Shebeen. The staff were very attentive and helpful with menu queries. Service was efficient and unobtrusive. Our steaks were delicious and perfectly cooked to our tastes. The accompaniments were also good especially the garlic mushroom! Their South African Malbec was a good choice to wash it all down. We can also recommend the Milk Tart for dessert! A good experience all round and we'd definitely go back.
Friendly, attentive staff. Mariana even remembered our last visit in February - even where we were seated! I am not in the habit of posting my food on Social media but my steak was magnificent and well worth broadcasting. We all enjoyed the experience both culinary and service, from entering until leaving in our Taxi - ordered by SHEBEEN.
This was mine & my husband's first time visiting this restaurant, after I had been looking for something different from the norm. We had the sharing starter for two,it was lovely,it should also be on the main meal options as we went from that straight to pud! Will definitely be returning to sample the main dishes.
