Perhaps too much of a rarity these days, St John’s Wine Rooms is unique and independent and here, much thought is given to which foods pair perfectly with which wines. Whether for lunch or dinner you can expect food that’s as classically British as it’s possible to find and every plate is as easy on the eye as it is on the tongue. In Bromsgrove – and owned by lifelong Bromsgrovians – on St John Street, St John’s Wine Rooms is next to iconic Steps House and an absolute favourite among locals. It’s head and shoulders above the rest in the area and we just know you’re going to love it.
As with the food (which we’ll get to), St John’s Wine Rooms as a setting is nothing short of beautiful. Four rooms maintain a typically Georgian feel whilst also giving a sense of modern luxury. The size of St John’s Wine Rooms make it one of the most ideal places for a private event in Bromsgrove, as well as of course being a dreamy casual dining spot by day or by night. As soon as you step through the doors on St John Street in Bromsgrove, the charm and family-feel of this restaurant is obvious and it’s exactly this that makes you want to sit and stay for far longer than planned.
St John’s Wine Rooms has fine selections of both wine and food. Even if you’re stopping by for a sandwich or a sharing board, we’re quite sure the wonderfully British flavours will impress. At lunchtime from Monday to Friday, two courses are available for £14 or three for £17, while at dinner there are luxurious options for your main course in the way of grilled fillet of hake with Brixham crab and spring onion and olive oil mash, pork belly with crackling and black pudding bon bons, or butternut squash & ricotta cheese rotolo with asparagus. When it comes to the wine, nowhere in Bromsgrove or the Redditch area has more or better, and whether you’re after a fine wine or a house, you’ll find international options that are varied in flavour, intensity, aroma and crispness. Great food and service, lovely atmosphere. Would definitely go back. Nice selection of beer and wine. They chocolate brownies are awesome! Waiting staff are attentive and friendly
Really lovely food. We had the chicken and hake, both of which were excellent. Service was great and unobtrusive. Will definitely return and recommend the restaurant to others.
As good as always. A very enjoyable experience. Would recommend St Johns for all occasions. The staff are friendly and helpful with a good knowledge of the menu and wine lists.
Excellent service, great cocktails and lovely food. Would return. Book in advance as they get very busy. Our waitress was fantastic. Two mains, two desserts and 2 bottles of prosecco £100 :)
Booked at a peak time on a Friday night and we had no complaints, it got a little loud due to being not too far away from the bar, however no services was lacking even though the place was full! Waitress was lovely and courteous and we all felt really looked after and listened to. Price on food was good for the quality and portion size you get, but for that quality you do have to wait a little longer for your food, but please know that it is well worth the wait! Plus that evening there was plenty to discuss so waiting wasn't a problem for us. Overall I cannot fault this place for anything, we had a wonderful Friday evening there and the only reason our bill was so high was the fact we were so merry with the wine ordering! But so good we booked the same table for Christmas whilst we were there! Just a great place to spend a meal time!
We really enjoyed our lunch today. It was fairly quiet being mid week, but the weather was nice so we had our starters outside on the terrace. We shared the Baltic platter, and we were really impressed with the amount of seafood provided, as well as some lovely chunks of bread, horseradish dressing and pickled beetroot. So lovely! We moved inside for main curse, as it had turned rather chilly, but the waitress was very helpful and the move was smooth. For main course I had the seared scallops special, and my husband had pork belly. Both mains were beautifully presented and delicious. We both though the terrace was a great spence, by the interior downstairs was a little bland, too much white for us, and the furniture was a little stark. Could do with cosying up a bit perhaps. We'd definitely return here as it is a great local independent and should be really embraced by the community.
We had a fabulous time at St Johns wine rooms. I had come back from Houston, where I now live to celebrate my sons birthday. There were five of us in our party, the actual place is fitted out very elegantly and has captured the historical perspective of the area but with a very modern, contemporary feel. The staff were very attentive and knowledgable about food and wine choices, we had some good discussions about the extensive wine list and the cocktails we had were fabulous. The food was really tasty, very well prepared and presented. All in all I believe having lived in Bromsgrove for over 40 years that St Johns wine rooms is just the place Bromsgrove has been crying out for. I will be going again when I'm back in the UK in May!
We came here for a birthday dinner for my husband. Service was very attentive. The food was generously portioned, possibly a bit overly so for the starters. I had the ham hock croquettes which were very good with the sweet potato puree although I could have done without the fennel puree. He had the smoked salmon & crayfish. Mine was definitely the pick of the two. Mains were the highlight. He had the rump steak with peppercorn sauce and I had the slow roast lamb shoulder which was fantastic. Tender and well flavoured. Will certainly return for a meal although will skip or share a starter in favour of having room for pudding.
Our first time at St John's Wine Rooms, but it won't be the last. There was a good atmosphere, staff were friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. So good to have somewhere in Bromsgrove that you can go for a great meal.
Had a great time eating a lovely Sunday lunch on their roof top terrace. Beef was plentiful and extremely tender, lovely home cooked cauliflower cheese (plenty of thick cheese sauce) and fresh vegetables. Super Porn Martini's were gorgeous. Service great. For our personal taste, could of done with more gravy (we were brought some but in a very tiny jug) Lovely private room, ideal for a private celebration (someone was celebrating their 21st) Thought this was a lovely idea. Looking forward to going again next Saturday to try their 'normal' menu.
