Testi is a long-standing ocakbasi or fireside Turkish restaurant in East London’s Stoke Newington that has been offering locals a taste of Anatolia since opening its doors down Stoke Newington High Street in 2000. Committed to quality and the highest standards of service, Testi’s menu is packed with authentic examples of Turkish cuisine, from succulent grilled dishes to homemade appetisers. Testi’s warm welcome and opulent atmosphere makes it a perfect place for casual dining or big celebrations.
Food was as good as ever. Service was a little sketchy. Perhaps the waiter was new? Anyway I enjoyed it, as always. Will definitely come back.
The highlight of Testi’s long menu of authentic Turkish cuisine is undoubtedly the selection of kebabs and grilled dishes, prepared using a traditional charcoal grill, and underlining this Stoke Newington restaurant’s ocakbasi character. All served with salads, rice and Turkish bread, classics like Adana kebab kofte, spicy chicken or lamb beyti are just the beginning – adventurous London diners can also order up quails, lambs’ kidneys, liver and marinated testicles. Ramping up the authenticity even further are Testi’s traditional Turkish dishes – the coban kavurma is a rustic shepherd’s casserole of cubed lamb, chunky mushrooms, onion, peppers and garlic, served on a bed of rice.
It’s not all meat on the menu at Testi’s Stoke Newington High Street restaurant. Turkish cuisine is replete with vegetarian options, and Testi does the tradition proud, with dishes like yaprak sarma (vine leaves stuffed with rice, lemon juice, dried blackcurrants and pine nuts) and patlican soslu offering up nuanced and meat-free flavours. Another way in to Testi’s extensive selection is to gather a group together and go for a set meal, the biggest of which begins with a mixed meze platter of hummus, cacik, patlican soslu, yaprak sarma, kisir and ispanak tarator, followed by lamb ribs, grilled chicken wings, Adana kofte, and lamb and chicken shish kebabs. Popular in East London, Testi’s Stoke Newington restaurant is a busy place, so make sure you book in advance.
