Steaks as good as ever in terms of quality and degree of cooking. Kebab sauce very salty and not like the old 'Chop House' sauce. Creamed potatoes very salty.

Kind and responsive staff, food disappointing but handled well by staff. Very noisy upstairs (like being in a swimming pool- hard to hear upstairs as 2 big parties in.

Food was good and staff very friendly but the restaurant was very quiet with very little atmosphere for a Friday evening. Perhaps we just went on the wrong night.

A great find and well worth visiting this restaurant in a building steeped in history. Very friendly attentive staff, food was delicious, my black pudding starter followed by chilli and mint monkfish were excellent finished off with a healthy portion of spiced carrot cake. This is a place you must try if you’re in the area

Really good service & food was of very good quality. Size of portion of chips could be better though & choice of vegetables with the steak could be better. Overall a good evening.

The food was delicious, everyone in our party was very happy. We all had 3 courses and you couldn't fault any of them. The serving staff were friendly, considerate and helpful. The fantastic range of gins served by a extremely knowledgeable bar tender were also very enjoyable, it was lovely to be given advice and ideas on what to try based on our individual taste preferences. I had Scallops, followed by Cornfed Chicken and finished with the Treacle tart. It was all presented beautifully and exceeded my expectations. Friends chose the 9oz fillet steaks and said they were delicious and cooked exactly as they had requested. We thoroughly recommend The Butcher and Tonic.

We really enjoyed our visit here. The food was tasty and we received excellent service. Even if you’re not a gin drinker, it is worth trying one of the many gins too.

Superb steaks, good food and gin! Friendly helpful staff. Room a bit plain and noisy - needs carpet or rugs to dampen noise. Loved the bottled lights. Will go again.

The food was fantastic but some elements of the service need refining. One of our meals didn't come with the rest of the party's meals but it was soon rectified and drinks that had been paid for at the bar were added in to the bill - fortunately we checked this.

Delicious steaks cooked to perfection. My husband had the T bone & I had the sirloin. Fabulous quality meat! My only comment would be that the peppercorn sauce could be a bit thicker. As non-gin drinkers, the bar staff could recommend gins to suit our tastes & our drinks were absolutely lovely! We’ll definitely be back.

On arrival we were offered gin tastings which was very pleasant. The young man serving the gin was friendly and knowledgeable. We were shown to our table and first thoughts of the room was austere. It felt more like a cafe than a restaurant. There was quite a wait for our food although the place was only half full. The meal was extremely disappointing. My duck was ok but the mess of vegetables it was served on was cold and tasteless. My partner had baked fish which was totally tasteless and because of this really didn't bother with the large potato mass and greens. Sorry but we won't be returning.

Lovely staff, great gin list and very nice food. Could do with some comfier chairs in the restaurant for those over 30, but the duck with Edinburgh gin sauce and the chocolate orange baked Alaska were inspired! We will be back :)

Great food and service to match. Good selection of meals on the menu please a small selection of daily specials. Huge gin menu but a little disappointed with a availability of beers during our mid week visit.

A reasonably good meal, with friendly and efficient service. The only negative is that the 'starters' are rather expensive. Leek and Potato soup priced at £6 is way 'over the top'. The bar stocks a very extensive range of small batch gins at reasonable prices.

Having visited here a few times when it was 'church street chop house' we were quite disappointed with the service. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary. When we arrived we were asked what we would like to drink, when we said we would like the wine list, the bar tender's response seemed that of surprise and disappointment at the same time - maybe everyone who comes here now always has a g&t. The wine list was limited but we chose a bottle of red. When the waitress brought it to our table she just put the bottle down unopened with two glasses and walked off! What happened to asking if you would like to taste it and pouring each glass? We ordered just mains as we didn't fancy anything on the starters, it was a shame there were no appetitizers, bread and olives etc. I asked for my chicken kebab with salad and a side order of fries. What I got was a kebab and a plate full of fries and a very small side salad. Presentation of the food wasn't the best. It looked like something I could throw together at home. My husband enjoyed his steak, which at £25 is a good job. We didn't order desert as they seemed very small when we saw other tables being served. Our main problem was getting hold of any service.. think everyone was too involved in the quiz downstairs. In the end we had to go down stairs to pay the bill at the bar! Think this place is now so focussed on its Gin that it has forgotten about its food offering. Shame as we used to live it here.

What you get at Butcher & Tonic is delicious food and good service. I thoroughly enjoyed my steak and the cheesecake I had for dessert. I appreciate that they did not clutter the table with fake flowers or candles, but it would have been nice to have coasters for the glasses. This is definitely not my last visit to this restaurant. I highly recommend it.

Excellent food. All beautifully cooked and presented. Service great too. Restaurant upstairs has fantastic windows and chandeliers with lovely photos of the area from the old days on the walls. Great selection of gin but we were driving so need to go back on a weekend.

Excellent food and the best selection of gins in the bar. Nice atmosphere as the place hasn't tried to squeeze in to many tables. We had a large table of 14 stag do next to us and it was no bother at all and not to noisy. I would definitely eat here again if visiting Lancaster. Spot on!

We we're greeted by bar staff in a friendly manner and offered drinks and then asked did we want to go upto our table or stay downstairs. We our meal which came to our table in extra quick time, maybe this was because the restaurant was not full. We did notice that they had more than enough waiting on staff. The meal was lovely and the desert aswell. The upstairs tables and chairs could have a bit more character about them to match the building. The floor maybe something to make it less noisy. Meat cooked to perfection and.vegtables not overcooked. Can't wait to go back.
