The information they give about themselves via facebook is just too wonderful not to be shared here: ‘Home of authentic, ambitious, occasionally masterly English cooking. Mainstream. Fish, seafood and game particular favourites. Avowedly Francophile.’ And this sparse and effective prose is all you need to know about The English Restaurant at London’s Spitalfields Market. Their decidedly understated name betrays the grand atmosphere and culinary joy they are certain to bring you – be prepared to be surprised.
With menus that cover breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner, The English Restaurant is your
choice of excellent dining at all times of day. Start your day with wonderfully invigorating coffee or
some freshly squeezed orange juice or poached eggs, all the way through to cocktails, fine wines and
fine dining at night. Their self-described ‘Mainstream’-philosophy allows them to do one thing first
and foremost: to please, by giving people what they desire, selecting from a wide range of attractive
dishes and high-quality beverages. And all at sensible and affordable prices. The English Restaurant at
Spitalfields Market is proud to be a meeting place and hub for the local community.
The English Restaurant produces all their food from fresh ingredients, sourcing only the highest quality goods for their restaurant, drawing freely from all the major London wholesale meat, fish and vegetable markets. They are also licensed to import wines from France and are inviting you to try their selection of homemade cakes and pastries, courtesy of a dedicated pastry-chef. With an aim to keep alive the great traditions of the English kitchen, you’ll be surprised how singularly breathtaking this philosophy is being put into fine dining.
Excellent food, great service, reasonably priced and all in a lovely venue. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Really good lunchtime experience. Good food, prompt but not rushed service, friendly staff who looked after our group very well, lovely old establisment with warm atmosphere, great location. Would definitely go there again.
Another memorable evening - such evocative and authentic atmosphere food prepared with care originality and panache .warm old fashioned/ stylish . Service is outstanding- they always remember what we drink
Great service - prompt and friendly! This time I ordered the blueberry pancakes, it's quite delicious but very rich . I couldn't finish it. Their latte is awesome as usual.
The English Restaurant is very cosy for brunch to catch up with friend. We had a booth so very private and enjoyed the food. My friend's poached eggs were initially over-cooked but they replaced them very professionally and service was good. Will recommend to friends and will go again for nice weekend brunch.
We very much enjoyed our evening. The food was just right and the service professional but also relaxed in a nice way. Great atmosphere with live music. We all had fun. We sat in the large booth at the far end of the restaurant which was perfect for our birthday dinner. Good wine list by the way.
The food was reasonably good but the service was terrible. We were left waiting for a long time before we were brought menus and there was a long gap between the starter and the main. When my partner tried to order a second glass of wine he was ignored and finally just stopped another waiter. The glass of wine did not arrive then for a very long time. To top it off they got our bill wrong, overcharging by £5. On the plus side the Christmas style dishes of goose and and turkey were tasty. I found the pumpkin soup a bit tasteless but my partner said his devilled whitedbait was very good.
This restaurant offer cosy wooden interiors with private booths allowing better conversation , interesting, tasty food, in reasonable sized portions, and all of it made the better for being washed down with Trumans beer - well done to the establishment for supporting local breweries, even if the wine is all French!
The English Restaurant has a friendly ambience and always delivers good service and food. The wine we were recommended to choose was excellent. Go along you won't be disappointed
