We had friends in from out of town so we went to the Royal Oak for a meal together. We all loved the meals we had, and our friend said at least three times how much he loved his venison. We'll certainly be back again.

The food was up to its usual high standard although the portion size of the sea bass was somewhat small. The peanut salad was delicious but the whole dish would have benefited from a portion if some kind of potato. This is not a criticism but simply a personal observation. Service was also excellent.

The chef is trying too hard to produce “different” food simply does not work on some dishes. Somethings just do not go together. Not saying just do the basic pub grub but things not working here No hand sanitizer evident but trying hard with masks etc.

Very good Thai fish cake, belly pork and steak pie. Plenty of vegetables. Lovely staff and landlady. We’ll be back. Good nature reserve to walk around on the doorstep too.

Lovely old hotel. Only slight bit of constructive criticism is that tea bags, coffee sachets and milk should be included in the breakfast bag until such time that the kitchens reopen to serve breakfast. Ran out of tea and milk on day 1. I did manage to get some from reception on day 3 though.

Total disaster for a family celebration of my wife's 70th birthday. The Royal Oak was firmly closed, and locals told us they went out of business about 6 weeks ago.

We had always heard good reviews so decided to try it on a beautiful summer evening. Staff very welcoming and polite, pub was very quite but pleasant atmosphere. Ordered pickled trout with beetroot relish and fennel for starter, attractive to look at but the trout was bland in taste, only the accompaniments made it interesting. I had fish and chips and my husband had the Ripon black bacon chop for the main course, delicious, and vegetables cooked to perfection. Only downside was that we were plagued throughout the meal by flies which was extremely off putting. Overall good experience, would recommend people to try for themselves.

Lack of atmosphere. Almost empty on Saturday night. Limited menu which is usually a good sigh as it means everything is fresh, however one of the starters (prawn cocktail) was not available!!!! Slow service - waited 45 mins for starter. Food very average

Food was excellent, service was inexperienced and probably needs some pointers. Wine was just handed to my wife, not opened for us or offered to taste it.

Tried for afternoon meal after reading reviews. Found menu very limited for meals , nothing meal wise appealed so ordered sandwiches, which were tasty. Would try again if menu was more tempting. Service and bar staff was fine.

Haven't been to the Royal Oak for a year or so but it has changed. No log fire burning in mid winter, few Xmas decorations, oak panelled walls all painted magnolia, no atmosphere anymore. Very limited menu at lunch time

a welcoming fire, which was lovely. A simple lunch and we look forward to going back for a meal in the evening, when the atmosphere should be a little buzzier, as it was painfully quiet.
