If you’re up in the North Yorks moors – on in Nidderdale, for that matter – then you are met with a surfeit of superb country pubs to choose from. Yorkshire does few things better, in fact, so that isn’t surprising and to the north of York in Thirsk, you can find one of the best examples of the genre in the form of the Watermill Bar & Grill in Carlton Miniott. They offer a full range of British pub classics – fish and chips, Hunter’s chicken, scampi and the like – as well as a few unexpected dishes, such as homemade lasagne, tagliatelle with mushroom and tomato sauce and chicken fajitas. If you take the train from York or Leeds up to Thirsk, they’re only a short hop along from the train station. Make sure you book a table in advance though, as they can get busy.
food was great, but was not expecting an American themed menu as nothing indicated this on the website and this was our first visit. Very helpful staff, looking to go back for the carvery in March sometime.
