Award-winning restaurants in the Plymouth dining scene

Plymouth's restaurants are of such high-quality that Conde Nast Traveller magazine has awarded the city the title of Britain's 'New Gourmet Hotspot'. The city's excellent location, between the sea and rich agricultural land, means that the restaurants in Plymouth have access to a fantastic array of local, fresh and specialist ingredients. Unsurprisingly, seafood is highly popular at the restaurants in Plymouth, and chefs get their supplies directly from the docks. Plymouth’s restaurants are understandably proud of their well-deserved reputation, and we can’t agree more.

Sweet treats and light bites at restaurants in Plymouth

If you have a sweet tooth, then the Devonshire classic cream tea is a must. Enjoy crumbly, buttery scones served with a generous bowl of whipped cream and a pot of homemade strawberry jam. They usually come with a pot of tea as an essential accompaniment and the only question is: do you spread the cream first and the jam second... or vice versa? Plymouth also holds the honour of being the first city to create the pasty, with a recipe dating back to 1510. They don't have the much sought-after Protected Destination of Origin, but arguments over the humble pasty are a great source of local rivalry between the county and neighbouring Cornwall. Make sure you seek one out at one of Plymouth's restaurants for a hearty snack.

Tuck into local dishes for a great evening meal

Plymouth's restaurants range from the classic English pub through to French bistros, Italian trattorias and American steakhouse diners. That’s not all; you'll also find a wide selection of Indian, Chinese and South Asian restaurants – to name a few. Don't forget to sample the local fish 'n chips, perfect served up with thick slices of buttered bread, or seek out dessert cheese boards which feature local specialities such as Devonshire Curworthy, Vulscombe and Sharpham cheeses. The traditional drink of Devon is cider and there are also local white wines from the county's own vineyards to enjoy. Plymouth is now such an important dining destination that a number of top celebrity chefs have opened their own restaurants in the city. Visit the Steakhouse Bar & Grill in the Crowne Plaza which is managed by Marco Pierre White; or the Barbican Kitchen restaurant, owned by local residents, James and Chris Tanner.
