Where were the first themed restaurants? (Hint: Not London…)
Believe it or not, the earliest themed restaurants surfaced in the late 19th century in Montmartre, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. More watering holes than fully-fledged restaurants back then, they mainly comprised cabarets and cafes that were built with the impetus of celebrating the revolutionary Paris Commune 1871 which had taken its roots in the district. Today, the menu, interior, ambience and general ‘feel’ of themed restaurants in London and around the world continue to be influenced by the main concept around which they are built. Among some of the most well-known names are the Hard Rock Cafe, which has been winning over locals and tourists at its Old Park Lane location in Mayfair for nearly half a century with its rock ‘n roll theme that features an all-American menu with a side of live acts for entertainment, while the Rainforest Cafe continues to thrill families just like it had across the globe with its Amazon-inspired dishes and interiors at its London themed restaurant.
