While there are Indian restaurants to be found up and down the length of the UK, few places can match Yorkshire’s curry houses for quality. In the heart of the capital of the county they have one of the best around in the form of Bengal Brasserie, where chef Mohan Miah offers award-winning Indian and Bengali food to the hungry public of York. That means tandoori favourites to start – all the usual suspects are there, from lamb tikka to seekh kebabs – and an array of curries to delight both newcomers and full on curry connoisseurs. We’d recommend going for one of the house specials, such as the gosth-e-laziz, a marinated lamb chop with traditional Bengali spices, or the vegetarian chilli aloo begun, a fiery dish of aubergine and potatoes, cooked in yoghurt with green peppers, and, of course, chillies. Bengal Brasserie is right in the centre of York on Goodramgate, just a short walk from York Minster, so top off a great day out in the historic city with a top-class curry.
Had another lovely meal here. Service is excellent and the food is too. will alway go here when in York. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone.
Top Food and Service. The same every time we visit. The Best Indian Restaurant in York. Staff are efficient and very friendly and welcoming. High Recommend.
Our first time and not the last, excellent food and service. The speciality lamb chop dish was cooked to perfection. Highly recommend. Reasonably priced wine available.
Great food, excellent service. Would definitely use again. Food of a high standard, recently refurbished. Good value for money. Restaurant was busy and is obviously popular.
I loved visiting the restaurant at Poppleton as the ambience and atmosphere and food were always excellent. My initial impression was just how small and dark this one is, which is a shame. My prawn purée was very oily and not pleasant. My favourite dish, king prawn pathia was as good as ever. I was surprised and disappointed to see the rice come out like an a sandcastle.... That is to say it had been packed in to a bucket and turned out in the plate. The music was a little loud for my mother who is hard of hearing and being seated by a large group clearly having a good time meant she could not, really involve herself, let alone us in any sensible conversation. Our wine was placed on an adjacent table and despite my request of one of the wait staff to keep my glass topped up...... Did not happen! The floors were slippy and moving a chair backwards could have been inviting a potential slip. All in all, this is the first time that I have ever considered trying one of Yorks other Indian restaurants but I shall. Will I go back again, yes because I have always loved the team and the food at their other restaurant and am prepared to give it another go.
Went with 3 friends on a busy Friday night. We all chose different dishes and were served quickly and efficiently. Poppadoms and pickles were good too. I had rogan josh which was really tasty - a reasonable selection of wines and we were all offered an after dinner drink of whisky brandy or baileys which was a nice touch. Really liked it here and it has been refurbished well - I will go back for sure.
Very good food. Good choice of dishes. We booked for 9.00pm. The restaurant was full with only our booked seats available. As people vacated their tables other diners soon took their places. Service was very good. Our drinks order was taken promptly and swiftly delivered to our table. This has got to be one of the best - if not the best - restaurants for Bangladesh quisine in York.
We tried the city centre restaurant for the first time after previously always dined at the Poppleton restaurant. We were pleased to find that the food and service was as great as it was at Poppleton. We were greeted by the Manager as regular customers and will certainly be dining there again.
After waiting 30 mins at the bar for my reserved table me and my partner were finally seated. We ordered our food and it was piping hot and tasted delicious and reasonably priced. The staff were very helpful and friendly too and we received a complimentary drink at the end and the manager knocked £5 off the bill for our wait.
Great food with impeccable service. Never pressurised but likewise never left waiting. Early evening or later on, the standards are maintained throughout whether busy or less so. Thoroughly recommended - a gem in York's restaurant world.
