India is a long, long way from Hartlepool in almost every conceivable way. While the coast of Malabar and the mountains of the Himalayas are understandably absent amid the hanging monkeys and decaying docks of England’s northwest, there is a taste of the subcontinent to be found on Whitby Street in the town centre, in the form of Cafe India. It is a family restaurant, and one that has carved out a niche among the diners of Hartlepool, with a menu that is packed with Indian favourites that the whole family can enjoy. Their house signatures include chicken tikka chom chom, cooked with fresh egg and cream and the hariyali, where chicken breast is marinated and barbecued in the tandoor, before being cooked again with garlic, ginger, coriander and spices, resulting in a distinctive green curry. There are plenty more options to choose from – all the classic Indian curries are there – so gather your family and friends and book a table at Cafe India on Whitby Street in Hartlepool town centre.
