Further Information

The menu at Upper Norwood and Crystal Palace Chinese restaurant Chi Oriental is as comprehensive as they come, with a huge number of authentic starters to get the lazy susan going segueing into classic soups – hot and sour and wonton – but the real stars of this southeast London restaurant are the duck, poultry and meat dishes. The kung po chicken and roast duck with plum sauce, shredded crispy chilli beef and Mongolian lamb are all mouthwatering and headily aromatic. Seafood lovers will love the Szechuan-style scallops, deep-fried in a thin batter with chilli salt and spring onions.

Those familiar with London’s any Chinese restaurants and looking for something that represents specific Chinese regional cuisines would do well to opt for Chi Oriental’s Hong Kong-style sweet and sour chicken, pork, or prawns, while vegetarians will enjoy the lo han chai with beancurd, Chinese fungus, mushrooms, mange tout, bamboo shoots and water chestnuts. Of course, Chi Oriental is one of the Upper Norwood and Crystal Palace favourites for those who simply want to chow down on some quality chow mein. Find Chi Oriental along Westow Hill, and be sure to book, especially if you want to seat a larger party.

We were seated on a spacious table and served promptly with drinks. Freshly cooked starters arrived promptly. The mains took a little longer as the restaurant was busy and we were offered a free drink! Again the mains were fresh and tasty with ample portions. Staff courteous at all times.

Vast menu with plenty to choose from. Shame about the Kobra deal! Delicious food with ample portions. Prompt and friendly service with a pleasant atmosphere. Will definately return soon.

Had to wait a little but worth it. Delicious food made with fresh ingredients. 2 for 1 on the draft lager a bonus too. Highly recommended!

Our first visit and the food and service were excellent overall but we didn't enjoy the dim sum. The texture was much stickier and a bit sickly than our preferred drier/crisper version. Coupled with the fact that we made the mistake of not checking how much were in a portion so ordered 8 each, a gentle check that we knew the portion size would have been appreciated but otherwise can't wait to return. Staff are all great.

Friendly service, and a reasonably priced wine list. The set menu was £18, good value, but perhaps contained too much duck. We ordered an extra chicken curry, which was quite bland.Overall, however, dining there was an enjoyable experience, and we shall return,
