It’s hard to conceive of any way you could leave this stylish Portuguese joint in Islington feeling sad – it’s even harder to conceive of any way you could possibly leave feeling hungry. The ‘Happy’ part is evident when you enter FRHappy on Upper Street, a cool, well-lit space with original wall-art sketches and bubbly staff. The ‘FR’ is from the part of this unique London eatery that makes it near impossible to leave unfulfilled – the famous Porto Francesinha. According to local legend, in 1953 Daniel da Silva returned to Porto from France and decided to redefine the classic French croque monsieur by adding layers, and layers, and layers of different meats and cheese, then dousing the entire thing in a secret, spicy sauce to create the now-classic soupy sandwich. FRHappy offers variations on the mouthwatering monster, including vegetarian and gluten-free versions, along with other Portuguese favourites, salads, starters, desserts and a comprehensive drinks list.
