In truth, little we can write will do justice to just how good Gaylord Indian restaurant is. It’s a true jewel in London’s culinary crown that’s been in the business for decades – the restaurant actually first opened in Mumbai in 1952 – and continues to leap from strength to strength even today. So, forget your average curry house and imagine dishes that look almost as refined as they taste, served in an all-ivory dining space with charming original art by Prithvi Soni adorning the walls. You’ll find Gaylord Restaurant London on Mortimer Street in the heart of the West End, just off Regent Street and not far at all from Oxford Circus, meaning it’s the perfect choice for before or after a visit to the theatre or indeed any other activity that Fitzrovia has to offer.
To go into some detail with the Gaylord a la carte menu, it’s likely you’re going to have a hard time choosing between the array of starters. The Goan soft shell crab in a light batter is something unique, much like the scallops seared in curry leaf oil and crushed black pepper. For your main, Gaylord serves plenty from the tandoor oven – thought to be the first one ever used in the UK, in fact – as well mains that range from vegetarian yellow dal tadka to Goan fish curry and everything in between. Indian dining in London really doesn’t get much more elegant than Fitzrovia’s Gaylord Restaurant. It is, by all accounts, essential dining.
