Mekan opens at noon every day of the week, which means it’s a popular spot for a lunchtime meze in southeast London’s Catford. Cold, hot, or mixed meze platters are ideal as single dishes for solo diners, but of course they are best shared among a group of friends and family, Middle Eastern-style. Our favourites at this Bromley Road restaurant are the new patlican salatasi (smoked pureed aubergines blended with tahini, garlic, cumin, lemon juice and olive oil) and the icli kofte, bulghur wheat and herbed minced lamb deep-fried to perfection. In fact, every meaty meal at Mekan is as succulent as can be, with the kitchen marinating all the meat and poultry for at least 24 hours before cooking.
The eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes mount up as you explore Mekan’s menu, taking in delicacies such as the tavuk pirzola (marinated chicken legs with garlic, olive oil, onion and fiery Scotch bonnet chili peppers), imam biyaldi (a vegetarian dish of stuffed aubegines whose name means fainting imam!), and very Med-style chargrilled swordfish. The prices at this southeast London restaurant are incredibly good, and get even better if you opt for the set menu, offering a range of starters, mains, and authentic Middle Eastern desserts for a fixed price. Similar but much larger banquets can be arranged for parties and private functions held in the downstairs area of Mekan’s Bromley Road premises. And, on sunny days, you can enjoy Mekan’s already sunkissed food with some of Catford’s best al fresco dining.
