The curry house tradition in Leicester is the envy of the United Kingdom, and there are few cities that can boast such a density of restaurants, and such a high standard across the board. The Golden Mile is the obvious go to area if you’re in the mood for a curry, and while the stretch along Belgrave Road that becomes Melton Road is the main drag, there are great Indian restaurants to be found further out as well. Indeed, if you continue along Melton Road as far as Thurmaston, you’ll come to Mumbai Chopatti, where they offer an authentic taste of India’s biggest city, especially through its vegetarian street food. Head in for a dal, a chaat, a puri or a Mumbai style sandwich, all with a huge variety of fillings, or for one of their Indo-Chinese dishes – the chilli paneer and the veggie Manchurian are local favourites – or even a Punjabi main. Make sure you book ahead, however, as they have been known to get very busy and it always pays to reserve in advance at Mumbai Chopatti.
