Hiding up on the corner of Jewry Street, City Road and North Walls this gem of a steakhouse restaurant is not. Winchester devotees of grass-fed beef are already familiar with the plainspeak-named Porterhouse Steakhouse and its superlative offering of simple-spoken take of the classic English steak restaurant prototype. Newcomers will want to get privy to the restaurant’s core menu packed with succulent steaks, with various Italian and British dishes backing the lot up, making for a great dining experience in the upper reaches of the town centre.
Regulars to this bright and approachable, modern British steakhouse are familiar with this Winchester steakhouse restaurant’s best hand – traditional cuts of grass-fed beef served simply alongside seasonal vegetables and a handful of chips. Unless of course you’re going for the traditional gammon steak, in which case expect an airdrop of grilled pineapple or a fried egg on top. Yes, it’s not simply simple steak on offer here – expect a few other steak standards, like the porterhouse steak sandwich, to round off proceedings here on Jewry Street.
A great introduction to what many know as Winchester’s premier steakhouse restaurant is to go for the Chateaubriand for two special. Start with grilled halloumi, asparagus & a mixed green salad, followed by the main attraction, 21oz Chateaubriand steak cut from the head of the prime fillet, lean and exquisitely tender, accompanied by roasted potatoes and chips with béarnaise & peppercorn sauces. Porterhouse Steak is a restaurant that beats the competition in the town centre by offering something familiar done simply, done right. A fair few of Winchester’s steak fanatics have made Porterhouse Steakhouse their restaurant of choice, so be sure to book a table in advance.
Very quiet on entry but soon filled up. we had been before but our guest was a newcomer. He had eaten in many countries but always thought British steakhouses overcooked their steaks. when he arrived and sampled his fillet his face almost lit up. Perfectly cooked. no need to say anymore
Our meal was lovely , everything fresh and well cooked . The service was great and we couldn’t of had a better night. We are already planning another trip back!!
Great service great atmosphere. Incredible food. 2nd time at the Portherhouse. Will definitely be going back for a third time. Can’t fault anything about the experience.
Having been recommended we took friends here on Saturday at lunchtime. The food, service and menu choice for the set lunch was excellent and we shall be returning.
Arrived early for our booking for 8 people, but that wasn't a problem as our table had already been prepared with 21st Birthday confetti........lovely touch! First class service and first class food. We had the lunchtime menu including a mixture of steaks, burgers, gammon and chicken. All cooked to perfection. Very welcoming and friendly staff. The birthday girl even had her personalised desert at the end. Thanks guys, we will definitely be coming back.
The food was excellent and the service was very good. The decor is clean and tidy but there is very little in the way of soft furnishings or screening, so when the restaurant became full the noise from other diners was almost overwhelming. It is not a very intimate place so if you're looking for a cosy meal with a loved one you'll be disappointed, but if it's a steak and a glass of wine with a group of friends that you're after, this is the place.
We visited on a Thursday lunchtime. The restaurant was clean and the staff were welcoming. We had a lovely meal. We chose the lunchtime special - which was good value and the choices were good. The food was delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful. We used this venue as a meeting point with family. We will definitely use it again for this purpose. We had a lovely time - thank you!
Really enjoyed our visit to the Porterhouse Steakhouse in Winchester. The food was very well presented and the steak was delicious. Nice bottle of red wine too - great service :)
Good service and great food. The 2/3 course menu (available Sun to Thurs) is really good value for money, the food is just as good as the full menu, but the steaks are smaller, of course. This is the second time we have been and the second time we have really enjoyed the experience. Can definitely recommend.
had a lovely meal here. There were a few issues but they were dealt with immediately. One issue was my daughter in law is pregnant and cant have blue cheese. we were told that the sauce was mushroom and it wasn't it was blue cheese. she had poured it straight over her steak. When they were told they immediately got her another steak and didn't charge us for her meal. We didn't have to ask they just rectified it immediately. Food was delicious
