There are plenty of places to pick up a kebab in the city centre of Newcastle – the Bigg Market would challenge anywhere in the world for density – but often the quality isn’t what it could be. The Turkish kebab is a different beast altogether from the mystery meat that can often constitute its similarly-monikered cousins, and at Red Mezze on Leazes Park Road, they do some of the best around. Their skewered meats are a speciality, as are the mezzes, unsurprisingly. There are Turkish classics like kofte, boregi and more, as well as moussaka, kleftiko and halloumi from their near neighbours over the Aegean.
