Southampton isn’t short of curry houses, and nobody knows that better than we do. But Royal Bengal – excellently located on Coronation Parade in Hamble-le-Rice – goes beyond the norm by not only offering Indian classics, but Bengali classics and wines from all over the world, too. And the staff are incredibly friendly which, of course, always helps. In fact, you could say every guest is treated like royalty… Unusually for an Indian restaurant, at Royal Bengal any dish can be mixed and matched at the diner’s request, meaning you’re guaranteed and interesting and tasty meal. Of course, if you’d rather just trust the chefs there are loads of unusual specialities available, one highlight among many being the thengapal duck, prepared with caramelised onion, bell peppers and fennel. Give it a try!

Get a table before they're gone
The heating must have been on full blast, after about 30 mins everyone at the table was sweating and sticking to the faux leather seats. Two of my friends who ate there got sick the next day, and the curry I had wasn't not particularly good in texture or taste.
