Spiceways

Spiceways has been established in Liverpool’s Childwall for long enough to have ridden the crest of the Childwall Fiveways boom. Now a fixture in the local dining scene, bringing in a regular crowd from Wavertree and the city centre to its stylish premises down Childwall Road, this is one contemporary Indian restaurant that fans of spice and South Asian cuisine won’t want to miss. As with the best modern Indian restaurants, the kitchen cleaves close to tradition, with any departures from the ancient ways being carefully considered; the result being novel interpretations of the classics that are still able to please purists.

Spiceways’ starters cover all the South Asian bases, while main courses include some of Liverpool and Childwall Fiveways’ best examples of tandoori, balti, karahi, jalfrezi, and many many more representative styles of Indian cookery. Unlike many other Indian restaurants, Spiceways doesn’t like to assume that diners know their way around Indian cuisine, and while they don’t condescend, it’s gratifying to have each section of the menu complete with a small description of what the culinary style entails. That said, a great way to test the waters at Spiceways is to sample from the list of the chef’s signature dishes. Highlights include the naga special, a fiery hot Bangladeshi dish made using the famous chilli pepper, or the mild Farsi special, a creamy blend of tender chicken or lamb cooked with herbs, lentils, and spinach. Complete with a wide-ranging selection of international wines, Spiceways is definitely one to mark down as a dining destination.
