Delicious and inspired are two phrases that spring to mind when thinking about dining at The Three Horseshoes in Sunderland. This rustic Italian gastropub has got the locals seriously loving it, with everything from the iconic St Peter’s Basilica on one of the dining room walls to the cosy fireplace, no small detail has been overlooked in this charming Downhill establishment. Passion for British pub culture combined with Italian cuisine is what sparked this Washington Road spot and we are glad for it.
Open for lunch and dinner, The Three Horseshoes offers a delicious and inspired a la carte menu with tasty dishes ranging from housemade pizza and pasta, to mains like stroganoff di manzo (fillet steak cooked in creamy mushroom sauce with rice), gamberoni (pan fried king prawns in a garlic and chilli sauce), and pollo alla contadina (chicken breast wrapped in parma ham). Italians have a strong connection to simple, fresh and delicious food and this passion is translated at The Three Horseshoes. Situated in Downhill, this Sunderland Italian establishment is a fusion of British and Italian culture and has everything you could want in gastropub dining – book and see why.
Calamari to start which was really tasty, and a generous portion. Followed by a steak, which was very juicy and cooked to perfection. The service was great and we will definitely be returning.
Arrived a bit early but the staff were very pleasant and very helpful and took it in their stride. Very tasty Sunday lunch - we had beef. One of the tastiest lunches we’ve had and we eat out quite a lot in the Sunderland / Durham area.
Excellent happy hour meal with plenty of choice. The king prawns were absolutely delicious. The staff are very friendly and helpful and The Three Horseshoes has a nice atmosphere.
Had a family Sunday lunch here today and the food was absolutely delicious! High quality ingredients cooked perfectly. Service was friendly and there is a nice outdoor play area for children. Only complaint is there was no draft beer on today for some reason. But even so will definitely eat there again.
First visit here but have been to Birtley Tavistock Italia. greeted by friendly staff and served drinks promptly. Ate a starter and main course. Hot tasty potato skins with dip, followed by king prawn risotto; beautifully presented and tasted delicious. The house wine (red) was very pleasant. We were not hurried between the courses as in some places who need the table quickly. Staff were very chatty but not intrusive. Music also was 60s/70s which suited us but not too loud. Would recommend without a doubt.
We had a wonderful time the food was exquisite we had the family with us which included our latest edition who is only 6 months old, she was unsettled when the main course arrived, the staff were marvellous offering to take care of her whilst my daughter-in-law ate then took her meal away and cooked a completely fresh one once the baby was sleeping what stars can’t waut to return for our Christmas Day Dinner 12/10 ⭐️
We love coming to this restaurant. The staff are excellent, always going out of their way to make sure everyone is happy and enjoying their meal. The food is always lovely and it's great to have a choice of other things on Sundays rather than just Sunday dinner. We loved the log fire and the Christmas music and will definitely come back.
Had another fabulous meal at this fine eaterie, everyone loved their meals - the children's favourite the potato skins, main course the beef just melted in your mouth and if you had enough room for desert the chocolate cookie and ice cream were to die for- will we be back YES and sooner rather than later 10/10
Four of us went last night to celebrate a birthday, we all enjoyed ourselves. Atmosphere was lovely and relaxing, the decor has some nice Italian touches, the food was very tasty, very well presented and excellent value. The staff were very attentive and fun. This was my second visit and I'm looking forward to my third.
Fast and friendly service; food was good quality and served in decent sized portions - we both left feeling very satisfied and will certainly return. We were very kindly given a post-meal aperitif of a shot of amaretto - a lovely gesture, but unfortunately, we could not indulge in as we were both driving.
