When looking for a tasty and delicious Chinese meal in Edinburgh’s city centre, West End or Haymarket areas, it doesn’t get much more authentic than at China Town on Atholl Place. The premises are gorgeous, including a full bar, finely upholstered seating, luxurious curtains and white tablecloths – the perfect space for an unforgettable date night. Planning to catch a show? The pre-theatre dining menu is extensive and affordable, featuring three substantial courses including a starter, main and a number of delicious desserts. Spaces are limited, though, so make sure to book in advance.
The menu at Edinburgh’s China Town is especially long for a Chinese restaurant, but we’re not complaining! Begin with an appetiser like the mussels with garlic and chilli, the torpedo king prawns or the spiced and salted chicken wings, then head straight for the special Cantonese dishes like stuffed aubergine with mashed prawn and pork in a black bean sauce, the crab meat with straw mushrooms or the fried fish balls with seasonal chinese vegetables. And there’s so much more to choose from – think curries, vegetarian specialities, roasted pork dishes and many more. There’s even a European section on the menu, so feel free to bring along even your pickiest friends or family to this city centre restaurant.
We had a lovely meal and as always the service was excellent too. As a vegetarian, I always like the wide choice of dishes on offer.
Best Chinese food in Edinburgh. The restaurant is bright and well decorated, the staff are attentive and friendly, and the food is excellent - with a very extensive menu. Highly recommended.
As always I had an excellent experience at the restaurant. The food was amazing and the service is excellent.
Very friendly staff.Greeted at the door and made to feel welcome. Delicious food.I have mastered the use of chop sticks, which makes for an even more enjoyable occasion. Attentive service and fellow-diners who obviously enjoyed themselves as much as we did Altogether, a memorable night and we will return, as General MacArthur said on another occasion A happy memory
All 8 of us enjoyed a good meal and good service at China Town. However, the a la carte menu is huge so 6 of us ordered the set menu for 6 as an easier option. That way we got to taste several different dishes - my only criticism of this was that the amount of rice served to all 8 of us was definitely not equivalent to 8 individual portions. But the food was good, though not out of the ordinary, the set menu price seemed fairly reasonable, and the 2 who ordered separately from the a la carte menu also enjoyed their meal choices. We also consumed a few beers and 3 bottles of wine, so overall a good evening was had by all!
Table booked for 7pm which is when we sat down with menus, sat for over 30 mins, nobody came near to even take order for drinks, noticed people who were seated after us getting their orders taken so were on the verge of getting up and walking out, but managed to get the attention of female member of staff or perhaps owner/ manager who apologised and then came back 5 mins later, was only going to take our drinks order but we insisted she take our food order as well as felt she might never come back again. Once order was placed drink and food was served quickly and food was all delicious but experience was spoilt by the wait at the start and the feeling that we were being ignored while others were being served so wouldnt go back for this reason. Shame really as food was excellent.
Dining at the China Town restaurant was an excellent experience in every respect. The welcome was friendly, both from the very charming owners and from all of the other staff; and the service perfect - attentive without ever being intrusive. The food was superb - all very fresh and delicious - and in very generous portions; and the wine list is well-chosen to complement Chinese food and is very reasonably priced. I would recommend this restaurant, whether for a casual meal or for a special occasion, very highly indeed.
In many ways a great nostalgic experience for one who spent a lot of the 70s in Cantonese eateries, including the one where the infant Gok Wan charmed the diners of Leicester. Good quality food, full of favour (no shortage of dishes suitable for my companion, who has sadly developed a condition making spices painful). But Cantonese cooking is as much about texture and colour than unsubtly strong flavours, and we weren't disappointed on any of those counts. Hadn't been here so often in recent years. This visit made me resolve to rectify that. We got them on a quiet night. They deserve to be noisier.
Fantastic food and service can't recommend highly enough. We had the chicken satay starter and the chicken and sweetcorn soup and the sizzling beef Szechuan and the chicken and cashew nuts both with boiled rice and finished with banana fritter with a lovely bottle of Chenin blanc This is a family owned restaurant with the family all working there and it makes a real difference!! Best Chinese in Edinburgh with a private dining area and modern stylish toilets!!
I can not fault the service on our visit. The restaurant was lovely inside too. The starters were nice we however, I was disappointed with the main of duck chow main. The duck was fatty and the noodles were white noodles floating in some sort of gravy. It was lacking flavour and the meat was not good. We over heard another table complain and send back their duck too. I didn't have the heart to complain to the lovely waitress. Sorry to write this but this restaurant was amazing when it used to be in Newington. We visited a few years ago and it took two hours to get served and all of our starters decided to give it another go to see if it had improved. I hope this helps to get things sorted. As it is an expensive restaurant too.
