Douro Valley is a homely, family-run Portuguese eatery in the thick of the action in Canvey Island. Found on Furtherwick Road, Douro Valley is just a short walk from the Esplanade, and it’s very hard to think of any more authentic European eating experiences to be had in the area. The menu is not limited to traditional Portuguese fare, with plenty of pastas, char-grilled steaks and Spanish paella, but it’s the treats of the Iberian Atlantic that are the real trump card here. Of course that means some of the most authentic peri peri chicken and bacalhau in Essex, but Douro Valley’s other Portuguese pleasures should not be overlooked, like the hearty fried pork with clams or a selection of their mouthwatering petiscos (Portuguese tapas) – we find the garlic tiger prawns and whitebait particularly hard to pass up.
The food was amazing, we had steak, chicken and mixed skewers. The staff very helpful and friendly would highly recommend to my friends and family.
Very nice meal lovely. The chicken and sauce were very tasty and tender and the saute potatoes were beautiful. The staff as usual were very friendly.
visited Douro Valley restaurant on Canvey Island a few times now, food is delicious, staff are lovely and friendly and really nice atmosphere. Will be paying another visit very soon!
Very friendly staff lovely meal we had steak .salted cod meat skewers . Enjoyed our evening . Never rushed . Would recommend you go . Easy to book on line as well
We were asked to move our booking from 7:30pm to 8pm which we did unfortunately there was a large party in there when we arrived and we were sat right next to them as a party of 4 2 glasses were broken on the large party table and we couldn't hear each other talk however as soon as another table became available they did move us you could see the staff were very uncomfortable with the situation however I feel perhaps they were too young to deal with it ( the waiter was only 17 bless him!). Anyway when the food came out it was excellent really beautiful it did take a long time to come out but we were not in a hurry its just by the time the entrees came out it was quite late gone 9:30pm ! It would have been nice to have been offered a tea/coffee or a drink on the house for the delays but we would go back again however I would not want an 8pm booking in case it took as long again. Oh and 2 of the dishes we wanted to order they didn't have one being the tri Colour salad they didn't have avocado as they were not ripe yet ( pretty sure you could get some ripe ones during the day ) and the Lamb Shank that was on the specials board to be told it had been up on the board for a few days ! Perhaps they should have told us that before we sat choosing for 1/2 hour my! On the table we had garlic tiger prawns then filet mingon, Mussels then lamb cutlets, white bait then baby squid and chorizo skewer and mussels followed by baby squid and king prawn skewers the food was excellent so worth the wait in the end !
We went there for our Anniversary and they had a specially setup table for us with Roses and candle light. The décor, service and food were all outstanding. We had 8 dishes of Tapas and thoroughly enjoyed all. I especially liked the fresh Muscles in the white wine and leak sauce. We are planning to go again very soon. The staff are friendly and atmosphere was perfect. the wait for the food was normal for the quality we had received. I do not mind waiting and paying good money for good food. The wait was well worth it. I will not hesitate to recommend this to my family and friend. Thanks Mat Batchelor
Great food and service. Varied menu and reasonably priced. It is now my favourite restaurant. You can't beat a well run family restaurant and that is exactly what the Douro Valley Restaurant is. Far better than any Pub Grub restaurant
Upon entering we were met with a friendly face, Milly, who we knew from a visit elsewhere in the area. This is her families business and she is the front of house. The whole package was very good. Clean, comfortable and welcoming, all you could ask for. We ate from the set menu and the Portuguese food was lovely as was the wine on draught. All in all a good night out, highly recommend this restaurant.
Douro Valley offers excellent authentic food, good wine, a warm friendly service and plenty of parking places in the neighbourhood. All of that at a reasonable price. What else do you need for a memorable meal?
It was our anniversary and I'd been looking forward all week to have a night off away from the kids and to chill out with a nice meal. I was told this restaurant was nice so booked a table. On arrival we were seated and We waited over 15 minutes to receive a drink, then 45 minutes later our starters arrived. There were 5 other couples in the restaurant so in my opinion not over busy. We ordered the t bone steak and after a further 20 minutes was then told they'd ran out...Friday night at 8.30pm and they'd ran out of their best dish??Anyway our main arrived and my steak was well done when I'd ordered medium rare so I sent the meal back. Mean while my partner dined alone. 25 minutes later I received the same dinner back. The sautéed potatoes had been microwaved and I still had the half mushroom on the plate that I started eating 25 minutes ago. The steak was awful. My partner came home and was violently sick. All the food was very poor quality and tasted like it came out from Iceland a few doors down. Very disappointed and we will never return.
