About Fifty50 Bar & Restaurant

Quickly becoming a leading light in the compact but reliably good dining scene in the village of Boston Spa, fifty50 is half bar and half restaurant with some serious skill in the kitchen. Helmed by television cheffing star Darren Danby, the vision here is of food created from quality ingredients, dishes that showcase the best of British and European comfort cuisine. This, plus a cellar stocked by intrepid bar manager Philip with wines from lesser-known, artisanal producers draws a crowd of curious gourmands and hungry families from Leeds and beyond. You can easily find your balance at fifty50’s bar and restaurant up on the High Street.

Further Information

Up on Boston Spa’s High Street, continentally-minded diners are treated to artisanal sandwiches, hearty main courses drawing from Italian, French, and Mediterranean cuisines, desserts and sides, plus a special menu for younger palates. The sandwiches are made to order with your choice of seeded baguette or soft ciabatta, all served with a side salad and lightly salted potato crisps. We like the very British rare roast beef or the smoked Scottish salmon in particular. If you’re after something weightier, go for the baby goats’ cheese crotin tart of the generous Boston burger with Emmental cheese, pancetta, relish and American mustard. And, when the bar opens, accompany your drink with prime minute steak with blushed blushed tomatoes, flat-cap mushrooms and fifty50’s famous chips plus garlic butter.

Dinner at fifty50 is something that gourmets from around Leeds hanker for. An artisan affair, even the stone-baked pizzettes are as upscale as they are rustic – garlic, rocket and parmesan; mozzarella, tomato and sea salt; or authentic Italian nduja sausage with buffalo mozzarella. Highlights from the main menu include many seafood dishes: whole sea bass with sunflower and basil pesto served alongside a courgette and roasted pepper pasta salad and blackened lemon, bowls of Japanese teriyaki and sesame salmon ramen with pak choi, radish, papaya and blood orange salsa destined to add a little exotic sunshine to your meal here in Boston Spa. A major drawcard at this gourmet bar and restaurant is the fire pit selection, featuring mouthwatering meat dishes like the slow-cooked, bourbon-basted rack of ribs with housemade coleslaw and a New York salad, flat iron Butlers’ steak with chimmichurri sauce, and – from closer to home – fine Yorkshire 30-day aged sirloin, ribeye, and T-bone steaks from fifty50’s favourite butcher, R&J of Ripon.

We originally booked to take advantage of the Happy Monday's B.O.G.O.F offer but after viewing the menus online my partner loved the sound of the Lobster Mac and Cheese starter, which isn't available on the Monday menu, so I conceded to give up on my love of a good deal and go the following day. On asking to take our orders my partner asked the server for her opinion on some of the dishes to which we were told she hadn't tried any as it was a new menu released just 2 weeks prior. We ordered the lobster starter, a New York Bratwurst burger and a rack of ribs. The server returned from the kitchen to inform us the lobster starter was not available, we were informed that it had sold out in the first few days of the release of the new menu but would not be restocked and instead it was being removed from the menu due to the cost of lobster. Although I appreciate lobster is an expensive ingredient, the starter was charged at £8, itself fairly expensive for a starter, the amount of meat you can get out of a whole lobster leads me to believe it would still be profitable to serve, we were disappointed to not to be able to have the dish we had specifically made the visit for. And when it was obviously a popular dish why would you remove it from the menu? Although dejected from the disappointment we asked to just have the mains, the burger and ribs were cooked to perfection and we thoroughly enjoyed them although it wasn't until we chatted on the way home we remembered there was supposed to be a bratwurst corndog in the burger, which there wasn't, but to be fair to the chef we hadn't noticed until it was too late so hadn't given him the chance to rectify. Overall the food was lovely, the atmosphere was relaxed and the server was polite and apologetic about the lobster.

Superb food for all the family. My husband had 3 courses but it looked so good that the kids wanted to tuck into the starter of macaroni pork balls and I looked longingly at his sticky toffee pudding. Our table was booked for 6 but we arrived early and weren't made to feel it was a problem and it was better for us because as a young family it was quiet and we actually had time to sit and chat without the usual iPads. The kids both ordered pizza from the children's menu and it was huge but they loved it and my son ordered a roulade from the adult menu for pudding which was heaven whilst my daughter had her pudding from the kids menu a sumptuous cookie! I was too full from my dinner so had a latte to finish. We all had a couple of drinks with our dinner and when we asked for the bill we were so pleased to find that as early birds we received so much of our bill, we will definitely be back

Food delicious, ambience very good and good value for money. Hard to chose as so many options I would have liked (specials board choices very tempting) I even wrote down the name of the wine I had as it was so good, intend to buy some for the weekend. Ways to improve: meeting and greeting not very good on arrival, trouble with tills -cannot get a tab at the bar then carry it downstairs to the restaurant so had to pay the drinks bill in cash. invited to go down to the restaurant and then abandoned (stood in middle of restaurant looking a bit silly - staff very apologetic after). In the middle of eating delicious ribs the tables to the side of us were cleaned and liberally sprayed which did not improve the flavour of the lovely bourbon sticky ribs (or indeed my sinuses). will definitely come back but hoping there will be an improvement in staff training. Good food is only half the dining out experience, you will be remembered longer for the welcome and service than the food... that said during our meal staff were very attentive so didn't get it completely wrong. hope the review helps

I never usually post reviews but the quality of the food and standard of service at 50/50 was so exceptional that I have to share our experience. We were a party of eleven and were dining at the same time as another large party both with young children to cater for. All of the food came out promptly and and was absolutely delicious. Hats off to the chef, seriously! It was a busy service but the staff couldn't do enough for you and were really friendly and good natured. And I got a pleasant surprise when the bill arrived. Excellent value for money. Thank you 50/50 for a wonderful evening celebrating my little boy's birthday.

The food at this restaurant was not only well presented but delicious throughout - several flavours on the plate that were only hinted at on the menu. I had the seafood skewers and my wife the goats cheese flan salad. We then had very large helpings of roulade. The service was so good that we could have been in and out and had 2 courses in less than three quarters of an hour (but we stayed for coffee). The staff were also friendly and attentive. This was an excellent last minute choice of restaurant after the original steak restaurant we had booked rang about 4.00 to tell us their ovens were malfunctioning.

This is a popular restaurant in Boston Spa and I can see why. The atmosphere is good, the food is excellent and the staff very attentive without being intrusive. All three courses were delicious ( calamari, superbly cooked steak and rhubarb flan). If I had one slight niggle, it is the heating in the restaurant. It was a cold night and to begin with we were placed in line of the full draught of the front door. We moved to an alcove area where a portable heater was doing its best. That is a niggle though. I would heartily recommend this restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

In the bar upstairs there is a good selection of premium draught beers / ciders and a good atmosphere for pre / post dinner drinks (or even just a drink if you are not dining there). Downstairs to the restaurant which is not large but diners are not crammed in. Great staff and a terrific kitchen team who produce wonderful food. Have been several times and will continue to do so unless something major changes.

Boston spa is a buzzing friendly village and a great place to spend the weekend thanks to places like fifty50 They have a great selection of quality food served by friendly staff The owners john, simon and chef Darren, have really put their energy into combining a vibrant contemporary restaurant (where you can hear yourself speak) yet with a buzzing bar above. Best of both worlds..... And great value lunches also. Highly recommended.

The restaurant and food was excellent. We went on a Thursday which was BOGOF night for Cocktails, Wine and Prosecco and it was very busy, understandably so! The staff in the restaurant were lovely, however the bar waiter in the bar upstairs was very cold and off hand. He seemed more interested in chatting to the local guy perched at the end of the bar than serve customers. No smiles or friendliness whatsoever... we were glad to go into the restaurant when our table was ready.

The upstairs bar was very busy and extremely noisy on a Saturday evening. The waiter said there were a lot people there from the races. Downstairs was busy but a bit quieter. There were minor delays in taking our order and bringing drinks. The food was good. Bruschetta, steak and pasta and service was efficient and friendly. I'm in Boston Spa from time to time but I don't think I would eat here again on a busy night. There are quieter places.

My sister and I decided to share a starter of fougasse, ciabatta and olives and then both to have the lamb main course. We had rather a long wait, about half an hour, and then the starter was brought at the same time as the main courses. We had to ask them to take the main courses away so we could enjoy the starter. They were apologetic and did not charge us for a further glass of wine that we had ordered. The food was good but this was a very bad mistake for them to make.

I booked a table of 6 for my 25th birthday and we arrived, ordered some cocktails that took 20 minutes to arrive only to be told that we could not have anymore of that particular one as there were no more raspberries but some appeared on a dessert an hour later! We got told there was a delay on drinks as the bar was busy, there was about 10 people in it! The food was nice but the chef decided to tell a member of staff off in front of our table which was very unprofessional. There was no effort made to say it was a birthday,I got told if I ordered a dessert they would of put a candle in it.. The waitress was slow and unenthusiastic. You can have nice food but if there is no customer service people will not return. Not the experience I wanted on my birthday. I left very unhappy and embarrassed I had told my friends that it would be really good if we went there! Oh and we got told there was no mayo, londis next door was open and nobody thought to go there

Went for the steak night, the food wasn't as good as I expected so slightly disappointed. The accompaniments weren't very appealing and we weren't given the garlic aioli to go with the whitebait. The service wasn't great as waited a while to even be asked for a drink. However they redeemed themselves when there was an issue with the beer pump and they dealt with it very professionally knocking the drinks off the bull due to the inconvenience. The steak was cooked perfectly for me which was a highlight!

Mixed feelings about this one. We were sat on a table at the bottoms of the stairs on a cold night, in an empty restaurant. Every time the door was opened we got a blast of freezing cold air which was awful. Told by the very pleasant but inexperienced waitress that we couldn't be moved and was brought a heater that didn't work. Food was good and arrived very quickly from ordering. In fact so quickly our drinks hadn't even arrived! Food was tasty and reasonably priced however I wouldn't be in a rush to go back and certainly not without a promotion on.

The food was really very good and served promptly. The service was good and the restaurant was well laid out and decorated pleasantly. The offer of bogof Mondays could not be faulted and it seemed to be kid friendly so no complaints at all. I have recommended to family already.

The service was slow to take the order, but food was fast to come to the table. Menu chosen was really good. My only negative point was where we were seated. A two seater table, close to a wall and in the walk way from the kitchen to the restaurant, so felt hemmed in and uncomfortable. If I go again, will go with a larger group to ensure the table was in a better position.

The food was great, well cooked flavoursome with delicious salads. It follows the current trend for burnt food, with charred this and smoked that. To my mind the menu is too big, but I suppose it's more choice. The only disappointment was the service, which was a bit flat. Not unfriendly, just not friendly.

Overall very good service. Had sea bass for mains, which was tasty and fresh. Others had pizzas. The pizzas were a bit skinny with the toppings and slightly expensive for what they are. Wouldn't mind if the pepperoni had more than 5 pieces on it. Nice place with friendly staff and will return.

Very small but busy which is always a good sign of course, specially for early Monday evening. Was a bit perturbed that already 2 items on the menu were unavailable. Good evening. Food was good (but not exceptional); I had Asian duck salad and Black Jack burger. Trivial disappointment....downstairs they use very small ugly wine glasses (when you order a bottle of wine), upstairs they use good size elegant glasses. My recommendation - give the crappy wine glasses to charity!!!

In our party of 7, four were satisfied or very satisfied with the food they ordered and three of us were disappointed. It would appear the chef is good at some dishes and mediocre with others. For example my sea bass was overcooked and the trimmings and flavourings did not match the dish. The restaurant itself is nicely laid out and the service was satisfactory.
