Quickly becoming a leading light in the compact but reliably good dining scene in the village of Boston Spa, fifty50 is half bar and half restaurant with some serious skill in the kitchen. Helmed by television cheffing star Darren Danby, the vision here is of food created from quality ingredients, dishes that showcase the best of British and European comfort cuisine. This, plus a cellar stocked by intrepid bar manager Philip with wines from lesser-known, artisanal producers draws a crowd of curious gourmands and hungry families from Leeds and beyond. You can easily find your balance at fifty50’s bar and restaurant up on the High Street.
Up on Boston Spa’s High Street, continentally-minded diners are treated to artisanal sandwiches, hearty main courses drawing from Italian, French, and Mediterranean cuisines, desserts and sides, plus a special menu for younger palates. The sandwiches are made to order with your choice of seeded baguette or soft ciabatta, all served with a side salad and lightly salted potato crisps. We like the very British rare roast beef or the smoked Scottish salmon in particular. If you’re after something weightier, go for the baby goats’ cheese crotin tart of the generous Boston burger with Emmental cheese, pancetta, relish and American mustard. And, when the bar opens, accompany your drink with prime minute steak with blushed blushed tomatoes, flat-cap mushrooms and fifty50’s famous chips plus garlic butter.
Dinner at fifty50 is something that gourmets from around Leeds hanker for. An artisan affair, even the stone-baked pizzettes are as upscale as they are rustic – garlic, rocket and parmesan; mozzarella, tomato and sea salt; or authentic Italian nduja sausage with buffalo mozzarella. Highlights from the main menu include many seafood dishes: whole sea bass with sunflower and basil pesto served alongside a courgette and roasted pepper pasta salad and blackened lemon, bowls of Japanese teriyaki and sesame salmon ramen with pak choi, radish, papaya and blood orange salsa destined to add a little exotic sunshine to your meal here in Boston Spa. A major drawcard at this gourmet bar and restaurant is the fire pit selection, featuring mouthwatering meat dishes like the slow-cooked, bourbon-basted rack of ribs with housemade coleslaw and a New York salad, flat iron Butlers’ steak with chimmichurri sauce, and – from closer to home – fine Yorkshire 30-day aged sirloin, ribeye, and T-bone steaks from fifty50’s favourite butcher, R&J of Ripon.
