We feel a bit guilty to be trumpeting the triumph of Sardinian cuisine over at Il Guscio as we’re certain to go upsetting the locals that have made it their own over the years. But in keeping schtum, we’re doing a disservice to the new-to-Hackney types and fans of Italian food across London, who will all be that little richer for having Lower Clapton Road’s homage to all tasty things Sardinian, Il Guscio.
The team at Il Guscio have a single rule, a guiding philosophy that underpins everything they do, drink Sicilian, eat Sardinian. This simple rule is in evidence everywhere in their Lower Clapton Road premises, where the menu is a detailed exploration of Sardinian eating and the wine menu deals almost exclusively in Sicilian vintages and liquors. And while fans of Italian food are well catered to with a menu of delectable pizza and pasta dishes (we can only urge you to go for the delightful simplicity of pizza like the Napoli or bufalina for a sense of classic Italian flavours) there’s also a handful of truly Sardinian dishes too. Try spada alla Mediterranea, a swordfish grilled and served up with cherry tomatoes, capers and olives for a taste of the Sardinian seaside in London’s Hackney.
Il Guscio has long been a local favourite, and while the Hackney regulars would doubtlessly like to keep things that way, greatness has a way of getting out. And so Il Guscio is slowly starting to build a reputation for really good Italian and Sardinian food in London. Away from the generic pizza and pasta places serving indistinguishable carb-heavy monstrosities, Il Gusico’s commitment to great Sardinian food is winning them a legion of loyal fans.
