We feel a bit guilty to be trumpeting the triumph of Sardinian cuisine over at Il Guscio as we’re certain to go upsetting the locals that have made it their own over the years. But in keeping schtum, we’re doing a disservice to the new-to-Hackney types and fans of Italian food across London, who will all be that little richer for having Lower Clapton Road’s homage to all tasty things Sardinian, Il Guscio.
The team at Il Guscio have a single rule, a guiding philosophy that underpins everything they do, drink Sicilian, eat Sardinian. This simple rule is in evidence everywhere in their Lower Clapton Road premises, where the menu is a detailed exploration of Sardinian eating and the wine menu deals almost exclusively in Sicilian vintages and liquors. And while fans of Italian food are well catered to with a menu of delectable pizza and pasta dishes (we can only urge you to go for the delightful simplicity of pizza like the Napoli or bufalina for a sense of classic Italian flavours) there’s also a handful of truly Sardinian dishes too. Try spada alla Mediterranea, a swordfish grilled and served up with cherry tomatoes, capers and olives for a taste of the Sardinian seaside in London’s Hackney.
Il Guscio has long been a local favourite, and while the Hackney regulars would doubtlessly like to keep things that way, greatness has a way of getting out. And so Il Guscio is slowly starting to build a reputation for really good Italian and Sardinian food in London. Away from the generic pizza and pasta places serving indistinguishable carb-heavy monstrosities, Il Gusico’s commitment to great Sardinian food is winning them a legion of loyal fans. Find them along Lower Clapton Road for superior Italian dining in the capital.
The food is so delicious. Took my mum for a meal and she loved the pasta special. The service was fantastic. My favourite place to go!
Every dish a delight especially the Sardinian raviioli. Great service great atmosphere we are very luck to have this gem as our local Italian restaurant
Always great food and service at Il Guscio. Despite being very busy with a Birthday table we were served quickly and efficiently. It goes without saying that the food was excellent. We had the rich and spicy Moscardini to start and the delicious Lobster and Crab ravioli for main. The complimentary limoncello rounded of a fine meal.
The food was delicious and home-cooked Italian. Really great menu. The staff were so friendly and the service was brilliant - nice not to be rushed off a table. The atmosphere is also intimate and friendly. Ha da lovely evening her highly recommend.
Il Guscio is a great restaurant the atmosphere is very nice. The food is very tasty, their pizzas are really good. I had the seafood spaghetti dish which was amazing. I will go back for sure.
I love Il Guscio. The food is excellent and it's a lovely cheerful atmosphere. Just had the best evening there with a bunch of old friends. I go back whenever I'm in Clapton.
We have eaten here many times and each time we have always felt very welcomed and personable. The meal overall was very good but not outstanding, because we had one pizza with ham in (We are vegetarian). The lasagna was cold in the middle, despite being told it "very hot" we then saw them put it in the microwave and given the same plate again, having been told we would get a new dish. However the dessert was outstanding and so was most if not all of the main course and starter.
Went to Il Guscio for my partner's birthday - we had booked for 6 but turned up for 8 and staff were very welcoming and went out of their way to find us seats and space. Food was great as ever, staff very friendly, and helpful presenting birthday cake at the end. Lovely dinner.
Great as ever and had a really nice evening as usual. restaurant was quieter than usual but still a nice and friendly atmosphere in Il Guscio
The food was fantastic, but was a bit surprised to be accommodated in the basement area with the suggestion we book earlier next time (I booked a few months ago?' We did also ask if there was any chance that the battery could be changed in the smoke detector as it kept beeping. The staff were lovely though and so was the food.
