There can be few places as renowned for superb Indian food in the United Kingdom than Leicester, and it suits that the city with the most people with heritage in the Indian subcontinent per capita would also have one of the most competitive curry house scenes to be found anywhere. Right up with the very best of the Indian restaurants in Leicester city centre is Lilu, where they go beyond the usual curry house fare to provide a menu of regional delicacies from up and down the whole Indian nation. The menu is packed with classics that everyone will recognise, but we’d recommend that you go straight for the house specials: try the Teerangi Puri, a Mumbai street snack done three ways, followed by Goan style chicken breast with garlic and cumin Jersey potatoes and a white wine vindaloo sauce – not one for the faint of heart. There’s plenty more, of course, but to try them all you’ll have to reserve your seat and head to Lilu on Highcross Street for a proper Indian in Leicester city centre.
Dear diners, please note that we offer a 2-course or 3-course fixed menu for you to choose from.
Fantastic friendly service and great menu. The food was wonderful and the courses well balanced. Excellent value and the family focus creates for a lovely atmosphere.
We had an amazing evening at Lilu Restaurant, we ordered the Thali-Lu and it was incredible. The restaurant had a great atmosphere and we're already looking forward to going back.
A very good dining experience, beautifully prepared high class food, we received excellent service throughout from friendly staff. I would highly recommend a visit to Lilu.
Brilliant experience from start to finish with a friendly atmosphere as soon as you walked in. It’s a brilliant take on a curry and everything is explained to you about what you are about to eat. Really friendly staff. It’s not the cheapest curry but well worth it
23rd September - 2 diners. Achieving & maintaining consistently high standards every time, is the challenge of any establishment & whilst Lilu has an enviable reputation, which was the reason for our visit, it failed to meet our expectations. As regular explorers in search of the "best Curry in England" we expected better on all fronts. Maybe we set our sights too high? Having dined locally in Asha's we were expecting a similar experience. With only 4 other dimers in the restaurant at 6:30, it is unforgivable that we had to return one main course as it was barely warm & when a waitress emptied a Carafe of Wine or Water (not sure) into the lap of another diner, it sort of set the tone for the evening. I guess it was just an off night, the food was good, but not in the same class of Asha's, the ambience was OK & personally our service was excellent. Two courses & a bottle of wine ran into 3 figures, its not cheap. Would we visit again, most probably not, but I'm sure the army of regulars will keep earning Lilu's rave reviews.
So glad I found this place! Not only was the food amazing, but the experience was too. It was pretty quiet for a Thursday evening but we were talking to the owner about the restaurant, his passion for good Indian cuisine and how he likes to experiment with flavours. I have to say the food was probably the best Indian food I have eaten in a very long time. I will certainly be spreading the word and definitely coming back!
I was looking online for the best Restaurants in Leicester and came across this place. The reviews were second to none, and I concur with everything that was said about it. The food was immaculate as well as the service. The staff were very attentive and the service of food flowed at a great pace throughout the night. Will definitely be going back again. This is not your typical Indian Restaurant. You won't be disappointed one bit!
This is the second time I have been to Lilu and as before the food was excellent, very well cooked with lovely subtle flavours and portion sizes which don't leave you feeling like you can't walk! The service was attentive but not 'in your face'. Its a bit of a hidden gem which I don't want to shout about too much, just in case I can't get a table next time I want to visit!
This is not your usual Indian restaurant, if Carlsberg was to do Indian restaurants this is how it would be mythically done !!! Seriously, our host was excellent in engaging in a friendly unpatronising manner with his customers. The food is top notch and so inventive. The combination of flavours, presentation and range of dishes is a gastronomic delight. We were totally satisfied. Will return on our next visit to Leicester without hesitation.
Never had Indian food like it. It was different from starters through to the mains on every front. The flavours and tastes were superb as was the presentation. The menu was small but everything on it sounded yummy. The service we received was excellent. I can honestly say that I will be using this Restaurant again and will tell my friends to go.
