Masala Kraft – on Fishergate in York city centre – is an Indian restaurant with a twist. Yorkshire is one of the world’s great places to eat Indian food. The historic capital of the county, York has never been noted alongside Bradford and Leeds as one of the great dining destinations, but down on Fishergate in the city centre, they have a restaurant which can be mentioned up there with the best of them. Masala Kraft adds to the usual curry house repertoire with a selection of house specialities that reflect the diversity and ingenuity of Indian cuisine.

First up at Masala Kraft, one must begin – call us renegades – with the starters. We can get excited about the samosas and pakoras, but they move away from the classics with masala calamari and curry leaf scallops. Specialities on Fishergate include Amritsari Machi – an Indian take on fish and chips, with fish pakora, aloo gobi and minted pea – and dum ki nalli, a slow-roasted lamb shank cooked with cashew nuts and saffron. If you are looking for somewhere to dine in York city centre, you could do well to book a table at Masala Kraft – but make sure you do it well in advance to avoid disappointment.
