Considered on of the UK’s best hotels, a picture-perfect Cumbrian manor overlooking Lake Windermere, it’s not surprising Merewood Country House Hotel & Restaurant is also a destination for gourmets. Awarded an AA Rosette for Culinary Excellence, foodies in search of modern British cuisine prepared using local and seasonal ingredients are easily lured into taking the trip up from Bowness to the lakeside gaggle of properties marked as Ecclerigg on the map, and from there winding up Ambleside Road to the secluded twenty-acre Merewood estate. The restaurant is helmed by head chef Carl Semple, and dining is divided between two gorgeously appointed rooms, the Lonsdale Room and the Green Room, plus an alfresco terrace. Whether for lunch, dinner, afternoon tea, you can expect the best the local farmer, butcher and fisherman can provide from the kitchen at Merewood Country House Hotel restaurant.
Lovely, different food for a special occasion. A first rate experience, with delicious home made breads and butter and unusual food combinations. Friendly and attentive staff without being intrusive.
My overall experience at Marewood Country House was positive: staff, food, ambience all wonderfull, however, the only negative was the room I had booked was not the room we were given: we had pre-booked a Lakeland view room and unfortunately we ended up in a small basic "back room" with no real view - the staff apologised for the booking mistake and offered us a free bottle of house wine with our evening meal. We had been looking forward to having a extra touch of luxury with the room so overall the shine was slightly taken off the stay.
Excellent meal in the fine dining restaurant. Very good value for the quality of food with reasonably priced wine list. Friendly staff and informal relaxed atmosphere.
