‘Fresh, beautiful and delicious’ are the three words that Osaka chooses to describe itself and while we agree wholeheartedly it’s important to note that those three words are essential adjectives when you want to speak of Japanese cuisine done properly – and this is just what this restaurant in Newcastle’s city centre does! Located in historic Grainger, opposite the grand Theatre Royal, Osaka is an ideal spot for those taking in a show or simply taking in the sights in this jewel of the north. Lunch and dinner are both on the cards at Osaka’s Grey Street premises, while set menus are a great introduction not only to what the talented chefs are capable of but to authentic Japanese cuisine on the whole. Go vegetarian with starters like agedashi tofu, gyoza, maki and main courses like tofu katsu curry donburi and delicious desserts, or non-vegetarian and indulge in delicious sashimi and stir-fried beef udon.
Osaka was my favourite Japanese restaurant in the North East, with its exceedingly authentic cuisine, respectable portions, and amicable staff - a real shame to see its closure.
The best Japanese food in Newcastle by far. Try the king prawn tempura and some of the specialty sushi rolls. The plum wine goes down pretty easily too.
