If you’re looking for a pub and wine bar in York’s city centre without the, well, plonkers, head to Cumberland Street, sidestep the manacles of York Dungeon and step inside Plonkers, a stylish watering hole and restaurant on the riverside that’s perfect for a meetup with friends and colleagues. The cellars are stacked to the rafters with wines, spirits, beer and ale, and the menu is equally stacked with Thai, European, and British cuisine, with Sunday lunches being particularly popular – plus most Sundays sees Plonkers mic up live music.

lovely friendly staff and really nice food lovely place we will be back.
When you enter Plonkers’ handsome two-storey premises from Cumberland Street you’re faced with a bar whose diverse tipples have earned the pub a reputation around York as being one of the city centre’s most comprehensive. Plenty of beer on tap and in bottles, red, white, and sparkling wines, Champagnes, cocktails – you name it, Plonkers can drop it down in front of you. As for the food, most of the action happens upstairs in a second bar with more of a restaurant atmosphere. It’s here that Plonkers Sunday carvery takes place, as well as a la carte dining with plenty of Asian, European, and British dishes on offer.
Plonkers menu takes in breakfast, snacks and light bites, and full meals. Grab a vegetarian platter or meat and cheese platter for two before tackling main courses like classic British beer-battered haddock and chips, Italian lasagne, Mexican burritos, Thai curries and more. If you’ve got a real appetite after taking in the sights in and around York city centre, go for something from the grill. Burgers and steaks are popular options.
