Great food in a nice atmosphere . Staff were very friendly and chef came round and talked to customers , a nice touch. We'd never been there before but would definitely go back.
Amazing restaurant. I have been here a few times now and it never disappoints. Food is lovely. Especially the frozen raspberries with white chocolate sauce. Staff are also lovely and welcoming.

We booked the table in advance for a special occasion. A nice meal before a nearby King's Theatre event.. A 5pm Saturday night booking. We chose the Red Onion because of personal recommendations, reputation, and nearby locale. In addition my husband, whose big birthday we were celebrating, had attended the Glasgow Cookery School with the Chef. In short, we were fans! When we arrived we were shepharded into a corner of the restaurant with other groups. Not a problem in terms of shared experience but a real problem in that the other three tables that surrounded us had obviously been there since lunch time, had clearly had a lovely day which reflected in the amount they had had to drink and in turn their level of noisiness, Honestly, we really did not mind how much people were enjoying themselves. But we had just arrived, and as older people could not hear each other speak in what we had intended to be an intimate dinner. We asked to be moved. The staff were very warm but whatever the management arrangements are that request appeared to summon the owner/chef. He advised that the place would be full and noisy in the next half hour.We were disappointed in that response given It kind of minimised the r problem though that may not have been the intention. We reflected on the response but given the placee was three quarters empty and we were really not that hard to please thought about leaving but instead thought we would challenge the initial response. So when the owner/chef popped up at a nearby table we took the opportunity to ask him again for us to be moved. Our second request was accommodated and we were moved although it felt a bit like being placed in the dunce's corner given the options in terms of the wide open tables and space available. That said, we liked the dunce's corner, sat next to a very nice woman who enjoyed her food, albeit we did not have the benefit of overlooking the restaurant, We were happy to settle for this for a quieter experience albeit the restaurant never did noise up to the level suggested when we were there, For all of what I have just said, which reflects how this restaurant is run. The food was fantastic and the wine was very nice too Working from the a la carte menu we had octopus, scallops, gressingham duck, thai seabass, cheeses, and pudding. The food was actually fantastic. And we would visit again. One to enjoy the food all over again and two to give the management a second chance in how they manage their customers.Thanks for a fantastic meal. JD
We visited Red Onion, wanting a nice meal a quiet table - no intrusive background music - so we could hear each other talk, as we were having an informal meeting of our work team. It ticked all those boxes, even though it was quite busy, being a Thursday evening. One of the party is Vegan, and she was very pleased with the choices on that menu. Another received good advice on how to order the steak and it was cooked just the way she wanted it. The fishcake was very filling with lots of fish and not over-potatoey. My wild mushroom risotto was very tasty and just the right amount. The puddings were great. We went for the fruit crumble, banana fritters and I can vouch for the ice-cream with salted caramel sauce which was more than moreish. The bottle of Prosecco was favourably priced compared to other restaurants and bars. Waitress was helpful without being overly-attentive (meaning not constantly checking if we were enjoying the food, etc, which can be irritating) Altogether a very pleasant evening in terms of food, ambience and the two-course pre-theatre menu is great value for money. We'll be back !
We really enjoyed our meal at the Red Onion. Great choice on the menu. All three courses were all we could have asked for. I normally only ever have two courses, but decided to have three, as did my two friends, and we were glad that we did. The staff were very attentive without being intrusive. Great value for money and each of us would be happy to recommend the Red Onion to friends and family and would visit again. Cannot really think of anything negative to say about the food or service. The only criticism would be that the tired toilets let it down. Definately not the same standard as the food.
Red Onion was, as I had been led to expect, a fine restaurant with very friendly, intelligent and attentive staff and a splendid chef in the kitchen. My dining partner is coeliac and particularly enjoys the Red Onion for its professional care over preparing food. I would and will go back any number of times. On arrival our reserved table had both the regular and the gluten free menus awaiting us. That's attention to detail! Very impressive and very good. Thank you Red Onion.
This was my second visit to Red Onion and it didn't disappoint. Nice ambience and excellent food. We booked Red Onion as we were taking another couple out to dinner and my husband and myself had both been to Red Onion before on separate occassions and we both thoroughly enjoyed the food so we thought this wood be a good choice, and we were right. Our friends really liked the venue and enjoyed the food, will definitely be back.
The fact that the Red Onion actually has a separate vegan menu with choice is amazing. A chef that can take the time to make good vegan food in a nice environment in Glasgow is a novelty. We are older Vegans and like to eat out in a nice places, the combination is often hard to find in Glasgow. You can get good vegan food but its usually pub grub and this is okay but sometimes you just want an up market feel to your night out. I am a Chef and Nutritional therapist and very picky about what I eat, so enjoying a meal out can be a challenge. So well done Red Onion on offering a better service.
