More about the restaurant: The Grumpy Goat

Only resolutely ill-tempered sorts could resist the charms of The Grumpy Goat. A family-run affair situated in historic Yorkhill premises down Old Dumbarton Road, close to the river Kelvin, The Grumpy Goat’s facelift has turned a somewhat neglected public house’s frown upside down. The transformation has rendered the site an award-winning Glasgow gastropub serving the best of Scottish cuisine, made where possible using ingredients gleaned from local suppliers, producers and smallholders. Close to many of the west end of the city’s landmarks, it’s a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.

Thinking about making a The Grumpy Goat booking?

The Grumpy Goat’s proprietors are the Matteo clan, a bunch with many years of hospitality experience under their belts (The Duke of Touraine, Oceans Seafood Lounge & Diner, The City Merchant). Tony Matteo Jnr., and his flock of grumpy goats (his lovingly tolerated kids), have sensitively restored the present site down Yorkhill’s Old Dumbarton Road to its previous public house glory, adding a judicious amount of gastropub class to proceedings along the way. The hard work has paid off, with The Grumpy Goat already receiving accolades from Glasgow and national food critics for its dedication to superlative Scottish cuisine, inviting atmosphere and impeccable service.

The Grumpy Goat begins its search for the best produce as close to home as possible, drawing on a network of trusted smallholders in the Glasgow region to keep the pantry and larder stocked. When they can’t get what they need, they move further afield, but always keep it seasonal and in the community. The result is meat and fish that is sustainably and naturally reared, poultry that is free-range, and dishes that are consistently of the highest quality. There’s a great kid’s menu to keep your grumpy goats at bay, and daily set price menus, but here are a few representatives from the sterling a la carte menu. A duo of smoked and hot smoked Scottish salmon is great place to start, while the Grumpy Goat house haddock supper keeps the seafood theme going alongside hand-cut rooster chips and mushy peas. 100% Scottish beef makes it into the Grumpy Goat burger, while the pork chops come with a mouthwatering black pudding mash. Italianate dishes like the filo stack and regularly-changed risotto are great for vegetarians. Admittedly an intimate venue, and all the better for it, we advise you book a table for Yorkhill’s The Grumpy Goat in advance.
