A good meal with very pleasant staff in a pub which we hadn't visited for many years. Unfortunately the menu shown on the web site was quite different from what was on offer at the Malt Shovel
Food was wonderful as ever, the steak and ale pie is a winner, the chips light and fluffy. Everything cooked well and the staff attentive and not interrupting you.
Lovely country pub in beautiful picturesque village.Food amazing , menu choice great-and the service and staff fantastic!!!Will be definitely returning and highly recommend it for couples families or parties.
Had it not been for the pleasant waitress then I think we would have walked out. Tables were left uncleared. The wait for our order to be taken was far too long and so was the wait for the main course
the team were clearly short staffed but worked tirelessly to look after everyone. The food was very well presented and overall good value, definately be going back
Wonderful! Great, friendly staff, great Sunday lunch and gorgeous surroundings. Historic pub in a quaint village. Good portions but that meant we we're too full for pudding-the only downside....
A very nice meal, in very pleasant surroundings with courteous & polite staff, would highly recommend for a visit & will be going back again.
Great location, great ambiance, great service, great food. There for Mother's Day Sunday lunch. A gem in the Yorkshire countryside. Will go again, enough said.
Fantastic service and the food was amazing, it was the best steak sandwich I have ever eaten, really nice resturant and we sat next to a lovely fire to keep us warm.
Had a fantastic meal and everything came without any hick ups. Lovely place! Only down fall was the beef as I thought it was a bit fatty. But everything else was spot on!
This is a lovely and welcoming pub restaurant with a very high quality of food and service. The sunday roasts are really very good - the meat was amazing - there was a good wine list and the children's menu is all decent home-made food (the chicken nuggets are homemade as are the haddock goujons) and they will provide anything from the main menu in half portions too. We had a wonderful meal. The Moussaka was slightly disappointing but everything else was really very good.
average food, pleasant but nothing to shout about. The staff were friendly and well mannered. The restaurant was too hot. I will not be returning any time soon
Had the aged sirloin steak with a peppercorn sauce and it was absolutely gorgeous. The atmosphere in the pub was friendly and very busy. All in all a great night out. Will return.
Excellent menu with very good food. Lovely service though the food took a while to arrive. Highly recommended. The pub had parking and very convivial tables inside and out. The greenhouse was too warm even in March on a sunny day. Lovely village too.
We were kept waiting due to large party in adjoining room however we were given complimentary drinks and coffee which was appreciated. Otherwise food and service very good and would recommend to others.
We booked for a meal for 10 people, it was a special occasion. However, due to the staff being extremely busy, I believe, the prosecco that supposed to be served at the arrival never arrived to the table....not sure what happened there? I am not sure why the steak was served sliced on the plate, this never happened to me before and I am not sure what was the reason behind. I... am more than capable to slice my own food a specially when it comes to a steak, so disappointed here I am afraid. On overall we liked the room, the music, the staff- even though it was busy they were attentive. It was a memorable meal for everyone, so thank you.
We booked for Friday lunchtime1pm . We arrived at 12.40 approx. After a warm welcome & drinks order taken promptly we went to our table just turned 1 pm. Orders were taken promptly - but we then had a long wait for our starter & again for our main course. Fortunately the food was excellent so we will return. Perhaps the day was busier than expected or staffing issues of which we are unaware.
Along wait for starters, but quality of meals was very good when they eventually arrived. We were compensated for the starter delay & staff were very apologetic.
We had booked a table for 12.45 and arrived about 12.20 - no problem , the table was ready. The food and service were very good , as usual. This is one of our favourite places for taking my elderly Mum for lunch and we will definitely be going back again .
Tye Malt Shovel is very friendly, well priced and provides very good food and ales. It serves a good non alcoholic lager, which all should do. All in all a quality inn.
Friendly, warm, country restaurant atmosphere. Very good, attentive service! Food is outstanding and the wine selection is truly exceptional since you can get just a glass--in three sizes no less!--of almost any of the well selected wines on the menu! We find the prices to be very competitive; we've never thought we paid too much for any dish. In short, a top-5 pick for a dinner out within a 20 mile radius!
Poor service and food, won't be going again. It used to be outstanding before it changed hands. Such a shame as it was always a favorite of mine.
The dining areas were pleasant with good size tables. The staff were welcoming. Food was good and attractively presented. Service a bit slow, but allowed for a leisurely meal.
What can I say! as usual the food was superb as was the service. It's well worth a visit to try their Braised Calf Liver, I've never had better. The Malt Shovel is a true country inn with a warm welcoming atmosphere. Do yourself a favour and go!!!
Lovely little pub, hidden away. Food was beautiful, and service was great. It was busy, but the staff were still very attentive, and the food was defiantly worth the wait!
had a fabulous meal. My daughter has a 3 month old baby and we were made to feel very welcome. I would recommend your restaurant
A sense of excitement at this pub with live music, great food & an eye on the future. Well done Will & looking forward to the upgraded conservatory😊
Excellent staff and welcome and lovely food. However, about 35/40 minutes wait from ordering to receiving the main course. Having read previous reviews which said the same we were prepared for the delay and appreciate when food is prepared and cooked from fresh. They just need to let customers know that there is about a 30 minute delay. No delay in desserts arriving, had sticky toffee pud, which was excellent.
Lovely place. Nice and warm, excellent staff. Great for romantic evening or evening with friends. Lovely food. Did have to wait a long while for our main meal but it was a Saturday evening and very very busy. Food cooked fresh. Waitress very attentive. Well done all. We will be back
Warm welcoming country pub style with fantastic food, slightly slow on service but not an issue for us on this occasion, will definately return again
The foot was absolutely beautiful and the staff extremely polite and very friendly. All in all an exceptional dining experience and I will be returning very soon.
Stunning food and impeccable service. Fantastic. Probably best quality food in Harrogate area including all the restaurants in town. The fire roaring and intimate nature of the pub are terrific
Fantastic Sunday Lunch! All three courses were of an extremely high standard. The service was attentive but not rushed. Would definitely recommend and will be returning.
Sunday lunch was excellent. Good choice of food on the menu. The Malt Shovel is a typical Yorkshire foodie pub. Good service. Would definitely return and recommend.
Fantastic food and the waiters were extremely attentive even to the point of remembering us from May 16 and what wine we had to drink which was extremely impressive !
It was perfect - everything we were hoping for and more. It's been a long time since we had a real decent Sunday roast in Yorkshire.
Brilliant lamb and steak meals. Disappointing Eton mess desert but this was raised with the owners who acknowledged our complaint. We've been many times before and will continue to go.
Very nice pub, food very good and staff welcoming. Lovely real fires. A little pricey, evening prices for lunchtime menu. More of a restaurant than pub.
Lovely food, although it took rather too long to arrive - my guesss is that they were short on staff, but they made up for it in professionalism.
Excellent food, good and attentive service - without being intrusive. Scallops, pork tenderloin and apple crumble tart all with tasty accompaniements. We'll definitely be back.
Excellent food, service and ambience, this was a Valentines lunch, the person serving us was attentive, the food was served quickly and well presented. Very good
Fantastic food, fantastic service, offered some off the menu options for vegetarians, no rush to get us out of the door despite us staying past closing time... we'll be back
Excellent food and service. The waitress was especially attentive. We hardly noticed the renovation works. We will definitely come back and recommend to friends. Thank you.
This is one of our favorite pubs .... food is always delicious, staff are lovely and it's a warm and cozy place. Always a fire going in cooler weather and we have always enjoyed every single meal at this pub.
Fabulous food was cooked to perfection, roaring fire added to the homely and friendly atmosphere. Must try the Black pudding boiled egg, absolutely fabulous. Thank you, will be going again.
Excelent shall go again when we return to the area attentive staff very good menu made very welcome good sellection of beers and wines very popular venue good ambiance
Really great food and friendly service Lovely warm log fires so cozy on a cold wet night Thanks Will for your company we will be back
The food was excellent and the beer very good, but the service was very slow. The toilets are in desperate need of attention and cleaning. Overall we had had a great evening.
The Location lived up to our expectations. The ambiance was pleasant too. However on the whole the food was a disappointment unfortunately! The crayfish starter was average but the avocados were under ripe so not the best taste. All 3 main courses were average but therefore overpriced for what we received. One was the belly pork which apparently was 'nothing special' as described by someone who eats out a lot. Another main was the game pie which was inoffensive but not outstanding. My main course was a very small mushroom stroganoff, mash and uninspiring carrots and broccoli.it was average again. The 2 desserts we ate : chocs tart and creme brûlée were average too. We were we expecting the food to be much better but it was no better than other local much larger pub chains. The food didn't live up to the higher price tag. Not inspired to return anytime soon. The service was slow and we never did get the bottle of water we asked for!
Great food, lovely menu choices. Good service and a totally unhurried experience. The bill soon added up though and even though it was more expensive than other pubs we have visited, the quality of the food matched the final bill so we didn't feel had done by.
