Warm welcoming country pub style with fantastic food, slightly slow on service but not an issue for us on this occasion, will definately return again
The foot was absolutely beautiful and the staff extremely polite and very friendly. All in all an exceptional dining experience and I will be returning very soon.
Fantastic Sunday Lunch! All three courses were of an extremely high standard. The service was attentive but not rushed. Would definitely recommend and will be returning.
It was perfect - everything we were hoping for and more. It's been a long time since we had a real decent Sunday roast in Yorkshire.
Lovely place. Nice and warm, excellent staff. Great for romantic evening or evening with friends. Lovely food. Did have to wait a long while for our main meal but it was a Saturday evening and very very busy. Food cooked fresh. Waitress very attentive. Well done all. We will be back
Stunning food and impeccable service. Fantastic. Probably best quality food in Harrogate area including all the restaurants in town. The fire roaring and intimate nature of the pub are terrific
Excellent food, good and attentive service - without being intrusive. Scallops, pork tenderloin and apple crumble tart all with tasty accompaniements. We'll definitely be back.
Very nice pub, food very good and staff welcoming. Lovely real fires. A little pricey, evening prices for lunchtime menu. More of a restaurant than pub.
Excellent food and service. The waitress was especially attentive. We hardly noticed the renovation works. We will definitely come back and recommend to friends. Thank you.
Lovely food, although it took rather too long to arrive - my guesss is that they were short on staff, but they made up for it in professionalism.
Fantastic food, fantastic service, offered some off the menu options for vegetarians, no rush to get us out of the door despite us staying past closing time... we'll be back
Brilliant lamb and steak meals. Disappointing Eton mess desert but this was raised with the owners who acknowledged our complaint. We've been many times before and will continue to go.
Excellent food, service and ambience, this was a Valentines lunch, the person serving us was attentive, the food was served quickly and well presented. Very good
The food was excellent and the beer very good, but the service was very slow. The toilets are in desperate need of attention and cleaning. Overall we had had a great evening.
Really great food and friendly service Lovely warm log fires so cozy on a cold wet night Thanks Will for your company we will be back
This is one of our favorite pubs .... food is always delicious, staff are lovely and it's a warm and cozy place. Always a fire going in cooler weather and we have always enjoyed every single meal at this pub.
Fabulous food was cooked to perfection, roaring fire added to the homely and friendly atmosphere. Must try the Black pudding boiled egg, absolutely fabulous. Thank you, will be going again.
Excelent shall go again when we return to the area attentive staff very good menu made very welcome good sellection of beers and wines very popular venue good ambiance
Great food, lovely menu choices. Good service and a totally unhurried experience. The bill soon added up though and even though it was more expensive than other pubs we have visited, the quality of the food matched the final bill so we didn't feel had done by.
Food was excellent - impressive menu with plenty of choice and the dishes were well presented. Friendly service and a lovely setting. Will definitely return
The Location lived up to our expectations. The ambiance was pleasant too. However on the whole the food was a disappointment unfortunately! The crayfish starter was average but the avocados were under ripe so not the best taste. All 3 main courses were average but therefore overpriced for what we received. One was the belly pork which apparently was 'nothing special' as described by someone who eats out a lot. Another main was the game pie which was inoffensive but not outstanding. My main course was a very small mushroom stroganoff, mash and uninspiring carrots and broccoli.it was average again. The 2 desserts we ate : chocs tart and creme brûlée were average too. We were we expecting the food to be much better but it was no better than other local much larger pub chains. The food didn't live up to the higher price tag. Not inspired to return anytime soon. The service was slow and we never did get the bottle of water we asked for!
Very small bar but lovely village pub. Do book. The website is really informative with 2 nice country walks which like any good one - end back up at a pub!
Lovely atmosphere, and wonderful food, what more could you want. very easy to book a table on line, rather than having to disturb them with phone calls.
A really good lunch at the Malt Shovel for all of us (6 people). All though the service was a bit slow the wait was worth it as the food was freshly made and of a very high standard. Service was very attentive at all times, and the atmosphere excellent with a rather nice fire warming the place up. Would certainly go back again.
Rib of beef Sunday lunch was very good. Roast potatoes plus 4 different vegetables, cooked al dente. Large portion. Cafetiere of coffee was poor, weak.
Great food, great service in a relaxed environment. This is the fifth visit and every time we gave a great experience and can't wait to return.
Friendly welcome, good service and excellent food. .A good selection of beers and a satisfactory wine list. My first visit for several years, will certainly return soon.
Lovely atmosphere. Good service. Meals varied. Calves liver a bit over cooked. Goujons fine. Dover sole beautifully done with lovely lemon butter. Wine excellent. Sorry about the 5 ttonight. It was top marks last time.
My first visit since the present owners took over some three years ago. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. We all enjoyed the food very much, we will definetly visit again.
First class from booking through Quandoo, arriving, lovely table and excellent service from all staff members. Food was exceptional, presentation and service was first class. Excellent experience and will 100% return as soon as possible.
Absolutely excellent food and service. It's a few years since we've been but we'll definitely be going back soon. It's the best pub food we've had in a long time.
Excellent service, good menu, well cooked food and lovely setting. It is always a treat to be made to feel so welcome on a cold wet night.
We had a lovely time at the Malt Shovel. Fantastic food served in a great atmosphere in this country pub restaurant. Very friendly and relaxed service. We were made to feel really welcome
This is a lovely old building which retains many original features. The food is really good and the restaurant has a nice relaxed atmosphere. The staff are always pleasant and helpful. We have dined there several times and it never fails to please.
Fantastic food and service. I had taken my family, who were over from the states. For Sunday lunch at a proper English county pub. They loved it. And so did we. We will be back soon
The food was brilliant. Tasted wonderful. Service was good and the atmosphere wonderful, particularly the log fire. Even when full it didn't seem full as the tables are nicely spaced out. Brought two American friends along and they too enjoyed the experience and the food.
Great food attentive staff and all reasonably priced. I would recommend anyone to go here. Plenty of space around the tables. Car parking a little small but room to park on the road
Found the malt shovel ok but we didn't book till 8:30 and i think because we where the last to order it all felt quite rushed, we had our starter then literally 5 minutes after our plates where cleared our mains arrived, i ordered belly pork which i found quite dry with very little sauce and no crackling. We ordered coffee as well as our desserts, and just expected that they would bring it when we had finished but it actually arrived before desserts were served, so it had gone cold by the time we drunk it, didn't really fancy drinking coffee while eating desert at the same time. Just a little disappointed with it really as we heard heard good reviews of the malt shovel.
Fabulous food with lots if choices, lovely welcoming atmosphere & friendly staff too - well worth a visit - would heartily recommend you give it a try for yourselves.
Prior to our visit as a party of four for Sunday Lunch on 17th September 2017, it must have been seven years or so since I'd last dined at the Malt Shovel, one New Years Eve. I'd not been back since, as at the time, it had seemed a tad "cliquey" for my taste, despite the food having been excellent; it just put me off a little. However, at the time it had I only very recently been taken over, and the atmosphere had, I feel, been a residual one, as no vestige of this remained. The staff are welcoming, helpful and courteous without being "in your face", and I'm happy to report that the clientele are also very welcoming, too, no doubt due to being very happy bunnies at finding such a gem. The Malt is delightfully cosy without feeling at all cramped. The food is delicious, being both beautifully prepared and cooked to perfection. And - what a refreshing change - thankfully, no one felt the need to ask us three or four times during the meal if "everything was okay for us" (don't you just hate that?). It's good to see a restaurant having quiet confidence in its food (and justifiably so here) refraining joyously from this irritating practice which seems to have become almost ubiquitous in dining establishments these days. Whilst it could be argued that the drinks may be just a wee bit on the pricey side (as is the case with all restaurants), the choice is wide and the food is 1st class whilst also offering excellent value. We shall most certainly be going many times more in the future. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.
