It was perfect - everything we were hoping for and more. It's been a long time since we had a real decent Sunday roast in Yorkshire.

Lovely place. Nice and warm, excellent staff. Great for romantic evening or evening with friends. Lovely food. Did have to wait a long while for our main meal but it was a Saturday evening and very very busy. Food cooked fresh. Waitress very attentive. Well done all. We will be back

Stunning food and impeccable service. Fantastic. Probably best quality food in Harrogate area including all the restaurants in town. The fire roaring and intimate nature of the pub are terrific

Very nice pub, food very good and staff welcoming. Lovely real fires. A little pricey, evening prices for lunchtime menu. More of a restaurant than pub.

Lovely food, although it took rather too long to arrive - my guesss is that they were short on staff, but they made up for it in professionalism.

Brilliant lamb and steak meals. Disappointing Eton mess desert but this was raised with the owners who acknowledged our complaint. We've been many times before and will continue to go.

The food was excellent and the beer very good, but the service was very slow. The toilets are in desperate need of attention and cleaning. Overall we had had a great evening.

Great food, lovely menu choices. Good service and a totally unhurried experience. The bill soon added up though and even though it was more expensive than other pubs we have visited, the quality of the food matched the final bill so we didn't feel had done by.

The Location lived up to our expectations. The ambiance was pleasant too. However on the whole the food was a disappointment unfortunately! The crayfish starter was average but the avocados were under ripe so not the best taste. All 3 main courses were average but therefore overpriced for what we received. One was the belly pork which apparently was 'nothing special' as described by someone who eats out a lot. Another main was the game pie which was inoffensive but not outstanding. My main course was a very small mushroom stroganoff, mash and uninspiring carrots and broccoli.it was average again. The 2 desserts we ate : chocs tart and creme brûlée were average too. We were we expecting the food to be much better but it was no better than other local much larger pub chains. The food didn't live up to the higher price tag. Not inspired to return anytime soon. The service was slow and we never did get the bottle of water we asked for!

A really good lunch at the Malt Shovel for all of us (6 people). All though the service was a bit slow the wait was worth it as the food was freshly made and of a very high standard. Service was very attentive at all times, and the atmosphere excellent with a rather nice fire warming the place up. Would certainly go back again.

Rib of beef Sunday lunch was very good. Roast potatoes plus 4 different vegetables, cooked al dente. Large portion. Cafetiere of coffee was poor, weak.

The food was brilliant. Tasted wonderful. Service was good and the atmosphere wonderful, particularly the log fire. Even when full it didn't seem full as the tables are nicely spaced out. Brought two American friends along and they too enjoyed the experience and the food.

Found the malt shovel ok but we didn't book till 8:30 and i think because we where the last to order it all felt quite rushed, we had our starter then literally 5 minutes after our plates where cleared our mains arrived, i ordered belly pork which i found quite dry with very little sauce and no crackling. We ordered coffee as well as our desserts, and just expected that they would bring it when we had finished but it actually arrived before desserts were served, so it had gone cold by the time we drunk it, didn't really fancy drinking coffee while eating desert at the same time. Just a little disappointed with it really as we heard heard good reviews of the malt shovel.

Prior to our visit as a party of four for Sunday Lunch on 17th September 2017, it must have been seven years or so since I'd last dined at the Malt Shovel, one New Years Eve. I'd not been back since, as at the time, it had seemed a tad "cliquey" for my taste, despite the food having been excellent; it just put me off a little. However, at the time it had I only very recently been taken over, and the atmosphere had, I feel, been a residual one, as no vestige of this remained. The staff are welcoming, helpful and courteous without being "in your face", and I'm happy to report that the clientele are also very welcoming, too, no doubt due to being very happy bunnies at finding such a gem. The Malt is delightfully cosy without feeling at all cramped. The food is delicious, being both beautifully prepared and cooked to perfection. And - what a refreshing change - thankfully, no one felt the need to ask us three or four times during the meal if "everything was okay for us" (don't you just hate that?). It's good to see a restaurant having quiet confidence in its food (and justifiably so here) refraining joyously from this irritating practice which seems to have become almost ubiquitous in dining establishments these days. Whilst it could be argued that the drinks may be just a wee bit on the pricey side (as is the case with all restaurants), the choice is wide and the food is 1st class whilst also offering excellent value. We shall most certainly be going many times more in the future. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.
