Run by chef Grant Scott – father of Masterchef winner Jamie Scott – the kitchen at The Wellbank Inn puts out a menu far removed from what one might first expect from a wholesome, traditional pub. Of course the British pub standards are given their due, and in many cases a new lease on life, be it breaded haddock or wholetail scampi, slow-cooked steak pie or a heartwarming sticky toffee pudding, but plenty of international flavours appear across the menu at this popular Mattocks Road, too – not to mention an encyclopedic selection of fine ales, quality wine and top-shelf spirits from the bar.
The chilli nachos are a house specialty, the macaroni cheese provides a delicious twist on a classic, and the homemade vegetable curry is a mouthwatering option for spice lovers. If you want to keep it local and British, you can’t go past the Wellbank mixed grill, a tantalising spread of fine Scottish meats from renowned local butcher D H Robertson.
